European Code against Cancer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Code Against Cancer (the original English: European Code against Cancer ) is a code of conduct , or a set of recommendations for the citizens of the European Union , based on scientific evidence. The aim of this code is to reduce the number of people who develop cancer each year in the EU.

The code

In 1987 a committee of several cancer researchers developed and published a code to combat cancer. The European Commission has the early 1990s, the European School of Oncology , headquartered in Milan prompted to make a review and revision of the Code and its recommendations. In 1995 the second edition of the code was adopted and published. The third and currently current version of the code was created in 2003. It was funded by the European Commission's Europe against Cancer program . The European Parliament supports the dissemination of this code.

The Code itself gives various recommendations for the daily life of EU citizens, such as smoking cessation, healthy eating and leisure activities, as well as cancer screening.

Evaluation of the code

In 1985 there were 850,194 cancer deaths in the EU. On the basis of pure demographic developments, an increase to 1,033,083 by the year 2000 was assumed. In fact, there was also an increase in cancer deaths during this period, by 12% in men and 9% in women. The goal set by the European Code of Practice to Fight Cancer of 15% fewer cancer deaths than in 1985 was not achieved throughout the EU during this period. In fact, a 10% reduction in the death rate for men and 8% for women and a risk reduction of 11 and 10%, respectively, could be demonstrated. Austria and Finland alone achieved the target of a 15% reduction in the death rate from cancer compared to 1985. The United Kingdom and Luxembourg came close to achieving the target. Portugal and Greece performed worst. The authors conclude that the introduction of the code and its dissemination may be linked to the prevention of 92,573 new cancer deaths. In most of the EU countries there have since been declines in cancer deaths. In the last three to four years in particular, the breast cancer and cervical cancer screening and preventive examinations that have been introduced are expected to play a role in further reducing cancer mortality.
