The Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn (WKO) is one of the internationally renowned German chamber orchestras . The Heilbronn- based chamber orchestra was founded in 1960 by Jörg Faerber .

history

The orchestra was founded and shaped into an international format by Jörg Faerber, who has been in charge for more than 40 years since the Orchesterverein Heilbronn eV was founded on November 8, 1960. Soon renamed the Heilbronn Chamber Orchestra , the orchestra gave its first concert on January 13, 1961 in the Gustav-Siegle-Haus in Stuttgart . Exactly 14 days later, the ensemble's first concert in Heilbronn took place in the Heilbronn Festival Hall Harmonie . In the autumn of 1961 the first series of rental concerts (subscription concerts) was opened. On April 30, 1962, a unanimous decision was taken to change the name to the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn .

From November 8 to December 5, 1974, the orchestra completed its first American tour with Maurice André as a soloist. In 1979 the first tours in Russia and the Far East followed. In 1981 the WKO first took part in the summer concerts at Neuschwanstein Castle , and in 1982 at the music festival in Montreux . In 1985 the WKO played in the plenary hall of the German Bundestag in Bonn.

For the 25th anniversary of the orchestra, Jörg Faerber was awarded the honorary title of professor at a ceremony in the new city ​​theater in Heilbronn in 1986 , after having received the Federal Cross of Merit two years earlier .

In 1991, the WKO and Kreissparkasse Heilbronn began working together for the chamber music series Unter der Glaspyramid in the bank's event building. Numerous recordings of this concert series have since appeared on CD.

In September 2002 Ruben Gazarian took over the position of chief conductor and artistic director. The orchestra has been playing New Year's concerts on a regular basis since 2003. In January 2005 the orchestra also began a cooperation with the Heilbronn Theater by playing the music for the Mozart opera guest performance Idomeneo of the Oldenburg State Theater for 11 performances . In 2007 the first concerts of the redblue meets classic series took place in the redblue event center of the Intersport retail chain . The series, which began with classical music in a relaxed atmosphere, has now been supplemented by orchestral collaborations with jazz or comedy performers .

Internationally, in 2007 the WKO opened the new festival Dias de Música em Belém in Lisbon . In 2008 the WKO opened the Festival La Folle Journée in Nantes . In 2013 the orchestra completed its first tour of China. In the same year the orchestra began a second subscription concert series in Ulm . Madeleine Landlinger became the managing director of the WKO in September 2015.

In summer 2018 Ruben Gazarian handed over the baton to Case Scaglione after 16 years . Since the 2018/19 season, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn has been a portrait orchestra of the Wiener Klassik series in the Herkulessaal Munich with 4 concerts each. The orchestra and flautist Kathrin Christians won the Opus Klassik for young artists in 2018 for the CD Weinberg-Feld-Theodorakis.

In Heilbronn, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra performs a ten-part cycle of subscription concerts every year. There are also five subscription concerts in Ulm every year . In addition, the musicians have been conducting the chamber music series Unter der Pyramide , organized by the Kreissparkasse Heilbronn , with around 9 concerts a year , on their own for over 20 years . In the more recent “redblue meets classic” series, which is being designed in cooperation with specialist retailer Intersport , three or four concerts are also on the program per season in a casual atmosphere, often in a mix of styles with jazz or comedy performers. The focus of the 17 open-air events at the 2019 Federal Garden Show was a wide-ranging program from baroque and classic (La Fanta Giardiniera) to cabaret (Beckmann & Griess) and jazz & classical (Obi Jenne Trio) as well as Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream in the version Franzobl staged by Light art trio Blauuwe Uur. The format of the lunch concerts initiated by Madeleine Landlinger with APPetizer starts in November 2019. The APP WOLFGANG is also used as a concert companion in the Herkulessaal in Munich.

Venues

The subscription concerts of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn take place in the Festhalle Harmonie in Heilbronn. The WKO also has rehearsal and administrative rooms there. Other regular venues in Heilbronn are the event room in the main building of the Kreissparkasse Heilbronn and the Intersport event center redblue in the Böllinger Höfe industrial area . In Ulm, the orchestra plays its concerts in the Kornhaussaal of the Kornhaus .

The chamber orchestra also gives regular guest performances at home and abroad. In 2008 it made its debut in Nantes, Bilbao and Tokyo at the “La Folle Journée” festival. Further guest appearances in recent years have taken place in the Royal Albert Hall in London, in the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Musikverein Vienna and Concertgebouw Amsterdam as well as on tours through Korea, Cambodia and China. In November 2019 the orchestra made its debut with 3 concerts in Taikwun Hong Kong as part of the Berlin Festival.

Music mediation

A special concern of the musicians of the WKO is music education offers for young people. Two baby concerts are on the program per season. Children and youth projects for Heilbronn are regularly designed and implemented. The WKO has been the sponsor orchestra of the Young Chamber Orchestra Stuttgart since 2008.
