John Alsop

John Alsop (* 1724 in New Windsor , Orange County , Province of New York , †  November 22, 1794 in Queens , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1774 and 1776 he was a delegate for New York State in the Continental Congress .

Career

John Alsop attended public schools in his home country. Then he moved to New York City , where he worked in the clothing and haberdashery business with his brother Richard. His trading house grew and he became a wealthy man in the process. At the same time he embarked on a political career. He represented the city of New Cork in the colonial House of Representatives for the province of New York. He was also one of the founders of the New York Hospital . Between 1770 and 1784 he was its director. In the 1770s, John Alsop joined the revolutionary movement. From 1774 to 1776 he represented his hometown New York in the Continental Congress. In 1784 and 1785 he was head of the New York Chamber of Commerce. He died on November 22, 1794 in what is now the New York borough of Queens.
