Roland Deines (* 1961 in Herrenberg ) is a German Protestant theologian , pastor of the Württemberg regional church and professor of biblical theology and ancient Judaism at the Liebenzell International University .

Live and act

Roland Deines grew up in Herrenberg and, after graduating from the Schickhardt Gymnasium in Herrenberg, studied Protestant theology from 1981 to 1987 at the Free Evangelical Theological Academy in Basel , the University of Basel and the theological faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , where he studied in 1989 passed the First Theological Service Exam. After a year of study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , between 1991 and 1995 he was an assistant at the Institutum Judaicum of the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen. This was followed by the vicariate in the Württemberg regional church in ceiling Pfronn until 1997 , which concluded with the second theological exam and ordination .

In 1997 he received his doctorate in the New Testament department under Martin Hengel at the University of Tübingen with his dissertation on The Pharisees as reflected in Christian and Jewish research since Wellhausen and Graetz (approx. 1860–1940) with summa cum laude . After the vicariate he worked for one year as assistant to Volkmar Fritz at the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies of the Holy Land in Jerusalem and then until 1999 as an assistant he represented the academic council at the Institutum Judaicum of the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Tübingen.

Between 1999 and 2001 he received a scholarship from the German Research Foundation for a habilitation project and was awarded the title “The Justice of the Torah in the Kingdom of the Messiah” at the University of Tübingen in 2004. Studies on Matthew 5: 13-20 ”. From 2001 to 2006 he worked as assistant to Karl-Wilhelm Niebuhr on the Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti project at the Theological Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . During this time he taught for three semesters between 2003 and 2005 as a visiting professor at Ben Gurion University in the Negev , Israel, where he was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor for the period from 2005 to 2008. In addition, together with Professor Zipora Talshir and Professor Cana Werman, he was jointly responsible for the “Deichmann Program for Jewish and Christian Literature of the Hellenistic-Roman Era” and the Deichmann Lectures held from 2005-2016.

He worked at the University of Nottingham from 2006 to 2016, first as a lecturer, from 2008 as associate professor and from 2009 professor of the New Testament . Since 2017 he has held a chair for Biblical Theology and Ancient Judaism at the Liebenzell International University. In October 2018 he took over responsibility for the international doctoral thesis in the Albrecht Bengel House from Rainer Riesner .

His main research interests are Gospel (especially Matthew) and Jesus research, history of science, biblical studies, ancient Judaism; Processes of revelation, writing and canon; the historical action of God as a methodological question; Pharisees as well as Jewish Archeology of the New Testament Age.
