He received his PhD in 1983 from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland . As a scholarship holder, he continued his studies at the University of Tübingen in Germany .

Bock wrote over 40 books, his work includes the monograph "Blasphemy and Exaltation in Judaism" ( Mohr Siebeck , 1998) and volumes on the Gospel of Luke in the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament and in the commentary series New Testament Commentary Series (Inter-Varsity Press). Bock is known for his examination of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code . In response to the theological implications of the novel, Bock wrote Breaking the Da Vinci Code , his best-selling book to date. It questions the historicity (historicity) of various ideas that are ported into Brown's The Da Vinci Code , in particular the assumed marriage of Jesus to Mary Magdalene . As a non-fiction author, he was on the New York Times bestseller list.

Bock also wrote many articles for beliefnet.com and Christianity Today online . He wrote The Missing Gospels , in which he argued for the existence and legitimate primacy of these early pre- canonical gospels and beliefs over the non-canonical scriptures .

On May 17, 2006, shortly before the premiere of the film The Da Vinci Code , Bock appeared on the television program Nightline , where he spoke about his book and the film. He debated with the agnostic Bible scholar Bart Ehrman over the question of whether the Gospels had been forged.
