action

Several members of the Genshibutaru gang, a gang of thieves active in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, are killed by a masked person. The murderer steals a book with the title "The Story of Yoshitsune" and a riddle from the victims. In Kyoto, Kogoro Mori meets Ryuen, the priest of a temple. He instructs Kogoro to find the "holy Buddha of healing" stolen eight years ago, which is only presented to the public every 12 years. In Kogoro's company are Ran, Conan, Sonoko, Professor Agasa and the other members of the Detective Boys. Kogoro is shown a letter and the picture riddle of the gang of thieves. The text says that the solution of the riddle would reveal the whereabouts of the Buddha statue. The next day, Conan goes alone in search of the Buddha statue. He meets Heiji, who once saw his first love in Kyoto: When Heiji visited Kyoto as a little boy, a girl was standing under a blossoming cherry tree and sang the song of Kyoto. Conan and Heiji go on a search together. Meanwhile, Ran, Sonoko and Kazuha visit a temple. Kazuha is concerned because she believes Heiji's first love is in Kyoto. Heiji tells Conan the story of the singing girl before they continue to Kurama Temple. Heiji barely escapes an arrow; the subsequent chase ends with the shooter escaping.

Finally, Conan, Ran, Sonoko, Heiji and Kazuha go to a tea house where Kogoro spends his evening drunk. There is also Chikasuzu and three investors. One of them named Sakura is very tired and therefore goes to sleep in a lower room. The girls go to the lower terrace to look at the river. When the owner of the tea house tries to wake Sakura, she finds him murdered. Heiji and Conan collect clues about the perpetrator until the Kyoto police arrive.

Since Conan has taken the keys from Sakura's jacket, he and Heiji are able to look around his shop. There you will find a copy of the Yoshizunes Chronicle, in which the name Saburoh Iseno is. Iseno was therefore also a member of the Genshibutaru gang. The picture puzzle is also included. Conan assumes that Sakura had the original riddle with him and that the perpetrator knew nothing of the copy. According to Heiji, only four people were able to murder him: Ryuen, Saijo, Mizuo or Chikasuzu. In addition, Conan and Heiji think that the killer threw the murder weapon into the river.

On the way home with Kazuha, Heiji is attacked again. The subsequent chase ends in a park. The attacker pulls a knife and attacks and injures Heiji. Kazuha rushes to Heiji to help and the attacker surprisingly leaves the dagger stuck in the ground.

In the hospital they meet Shiratori. Kazuha asks Ran to take care of Heiji and leaves the hospital. When Ran goes to Heiji's hospital room, both Heiji and Conan have disappeared. Both check the alibis of the three investors. Neither of the three has an alibi. Chikasuzu is added. On the way back, Chikasuzu starts singing the song from Kyoto. Heiji thinks she is his first love.

Conan meets the Detective Boys on the way back, but without Genta, who is lost. Conan tracks down Genta with the help of his glasses and explains the detective badges to Heiji. Conan and Heiji have a flash of thought and go to the river in front of the tea house.

Meanwhile, Kazuha is looking for a piece of the mask that she knocked out with a stone while he was rescuing Heiji. She finds it, but is watched.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Commissioner Megure is pondering the finds from the corpses: a pair of gloves for the first, a scarf for the second and a hat for the third. Both the fabric and the color are identical. Megure, Takagi, and Sato conclude that either Benkei or Yoshizune is dead and things have been split up as keepsakes. You inform Shiratori about this new knowledge by telephone. Meanwhile, Chikasuzu talks about her past: Her mother was a geisha but died when Chikasuzu was five years old. The owner of the tea house took Chikasuzu in and looked after her. The father is unknown, but until three months ago they received monthly anonymous mailings. Kogoro Mori thinks that Chikasuzu Sakura's killer and Commissioner Ayanokohji is her accomplice. The motive is revenge for the murder of her father Yoshitsune. However, his evidence can be refuted.

Heiji and Conan believe they have solved the picture puzzle. So they start running, and you can already see here that Heiji is worse off. The two reconstruct the story of the gang and the riddle and assume that Heiji should be killed because his pearl is part of the Buddha statue. Heiji gets a call and learns that Kazuha has been kidnapped. The kidnappers demand that Heiji visit a specific temple. Heiji collapses and remains unconscious. Nevertheless, Heiji later appears at the temple and reveals his solution to the case: Saijoh alias Benkei is the murderer. Benkei lets Kazuha go to Heiji and asks for the Buddha's crystal. Benkei attacks Heiji. It turns out that Shinichi has disguised himself as Heiji. The real Heiji, who has meanwhile stolen from the hospital, appears and fights against Benkei and his men. As Shinichi prepares to turn back into Conan, he runs into the forest. There he meets Ran and numbs her with the anesthetic chronometer before he becomes Conan again.

Conan then intervenes in the battle in the temple, and Heiji can defeat Benkei with Conan's help. Eventually Benkei and his helpers are arrested.

Before leaving, Mori apologizes to the high priest for not being able to find the Buddha. After departure, the high priest and priest go to the shrine and open it. They are amazed to find that the Buddha and Heiji's cap are standing in the shrine. Conan and Heiji had found it before daybreak in a small watchtower in the temple complex. At the train station, Heiji realizes from a story by Kazuha that she is his first love, but he does not tell her.

reception

The manga scene writes that the film could also be called “the first Heiji film”, since it is mainly about the detective from Osaka. It delivers chases and gripping fights, plus great backgrounds in the landscape and temple scenes, so that the film also visually sets itself apart from the previous ones in the series. The very Japanese puzzles and backstories shouldn't put western viewers off. Overall, The Crossing of the Labyrinth is a lot of fun and one of the best films in the series.
