Shabaki is a modern Iranian language classified by linguists as a dialect of the Zaza-Gorani group within the northwest Iranian languages. Shabaki is spoken by the Shabak , an ethnic group living in the disputed areas of northern Iraq .
The language has similarities with Hawrami, another Zaza Gorani dialect. Shabaki also has Persian , Turkish and Arabic elements.
Shabaki is not a written language. There are attempts to introduce the Arabic alphabet and the Latin script for the Shabaki. According to estimates, there were between 10,000 and 20,000 Schabaki speakers in 1989. According to the ethnic group's own estimates, the number of Shabaks was 350,000 to 400,000 in 2016, although it is unclear how many of them speak Shabaki.
