Yuzhnouralsk ( Russian Южноуральск ) is a city in Chelyabinsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 37,877 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the eastern edge of the Southern Urals about 90 km south of the Oblast capital Chelyabinsk on the Uwelka , a left tributary of the Ui in the Ob river system .
Yuzhnouralsk is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast.
The city lies on the railway line Tscheljabinsk- Troitsk - Orsk or - Qostanai (Station Nischneuwelskaja , about 7 kilometers east of the city center) and the highway M36 Yekaterinburg -Troizk- Kazakh border.
history
A settlement in the area of today's city was established in 1745, called itself Nizhne-Uwelskaya from 1749 and became Stanitsa of the Third Troitsk Department of the Orenburg Cossacks from 1844 .
The present city was built in 1948 in connection with the construction of the Southern Urals thermal power station (Russian: Yuzhnouralskaya GRES ). In 1950 the place was given the status of an urban-type settlement under the name Yuzhnouralski - Russian for South Urals (settlement) - and on February 1, 1963, in the current form of the name, city rights.

There has been a local museum in Yuzhnouralsk since 1989.
