Plast ( Russian Пласт ) is a city in Chelyabinsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,342 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the eastern edge of the Southern Urals about 130 km southwest of the Oblast capital, Chelyabinsk .
Plast is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
history
In the middle of the 19th century, a gold prospecting settlement emerged on the site of the present city , when a thick layer of gold-bearing sand was discovered here, which was called Bolshoi plast ( large seam ).
On October 7, 1940, the miners' settlements of Plast (in place of the former Kotschkar gold mines ), Novotroizk (Novo-Troizkoje) , Ptschelnik , Wysselki , Aul and others merged to form the town of Plast.

economy
Plast has been the center of gold mining in the Southern Urals since the 1860s. Marble , kaolin and talc are also extracted in the area. There is also timber industry.
