Kataw-Ivanovsk ( Russian Катав-Ивановск ) is a city in the Chelyabinsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,630 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the western flank of the Southern Urals about 320 km southwest of the Oblast capital Chelyabinsk on the Kataw , a left tributary of the Jurjusan in the river system of the Kama .

Kataw-Ivanovsk is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The city is connected by a 37-kilometer branch line with Jurjusan and the Wjasowaja station (route km 1818 from Moscow) of the southern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway Moscow - Samara - Chelyabinsk - Omsk .

history

Kataw-Ivanovsk was created in 1757 in connection with the establishment of the ironworks Kataw-Ivanovsky Sawod by the merchants Ivan Tverdyschew and Ivan Mjasnikow, from whose first names the addition to the name of the river resulted in the name of the work and the place. On August 27, 1939, the place received city rights.

Culture and sights

The town has had a local history museum since 1975, which is now located on the former estate of the Beloselski-Beloserski aristocratic family, who owned the local ironworks from the end of the 18th to the end of the 19th century. The theme of the museum is also the Decembrist uprising , as members of the noble family were involved.

The church of John the Baptist ( Церковь Иоанна Предтечи / zerkow Ioanna Predtetschi) from 1824 has been preserved in the village .
