geography

The settlement is located in the southeastern foothills of the Urals , about 80 km as the crow flies south of the Oblast capital Chelyabinsk . history

The place was founded as Nizhne-Uwelskoje (later also in the form Nizhne-Uwelsky ) towards the end of the 19th century in connection with the construction of the Chelyabinsk - Troitsk railway line in an area colonized by Russian Cossacks since the middle of the 18th century . It initially belonged to the western Stanitsa Nizhne-Uwelskaja in place of today's city of Yuzhnouralsk.

As part of an administrative reform, Staniza became the administrative center of a Rajon on May 24, 1924. In 1934 the administrative headquarters were moved to the meanwhile more important station settlement, which was renamed Uwelski . In 1944 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement , but lost it again in 1992.
