The Luftflotte 5 (Lfl. 5) was an air fleet of the Luftwaffe of the Wehrmacht , established on April 12, 1940 , which was used in Northern Europe during the Second World War and existed until September 1944.

history

Luftflotte 5 was set up in Hamburg on April 12, 1940 under the orders of Colonel General Erhard Milch and then relocated to Oslo in Norway , which had previously been occupied as part of the Weser exercise . On May 9th of the same year General der Flieger Hans-Jürgen Stumpff took over the air fleet. In addition to attacks on ship targets, the air fleet also took part in the Battle of Britain in late summer and autumn 1940. The largest single mission took place on August 15th.

After the attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, a new task was added to the support of the German-Finnish army units on the Lapland and Karelia fronts as well as the fight against the allied northern sea convoys . In September 1944 the air fleet was merged with the Luftgaukommando Norway and renamed the Commanding General of the German Air Force in Norway .
