Brett Lernout (born September 24, 1995 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League (NHL) since July 2019 and for their farm team , the Chicago Wolves , in the American Hockey League (AHL) plays on the position of defender .

Career

Lernout was born in Winnipeg and played there for various youth teams before moving to the Western Hockey League (WHL) at the end of the 2011/12 season, where he was initially active for the Saskatoon Blades and later for the Swift Current Broncos .

Due to his good performance at the Broncos, the Canadiens de Montréal became aware of him and selected him in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in 73rd position. During another successful season with the Broncos, in which he was promoted to one of the assistant captains, he received a three-year entry-level contract from the Canadiens in December 2014 .

At the end of the 2014/15 season he was on the ice for the first time in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Canadiens' farm team , the Hamilton Bulldogs . He made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) on April 3, 2016 in a 4-3 away defeat by the Florida Panthers .

After more than four years in the organization of the Canadiens, Lernout moved to the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent in July 2019 .
