Patrick Dwyer (born June 22, 1983 in Great Falls , Montana ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Belfast Giants from the British Elite Ice Hockey League since July 2018 and plays for them in the position of right winger .
Career
Dwyer was selected as the 116th overall player by the Atlanta Thrashers during the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round . From 2001 to 2005 the American played for the Western Michigan University ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association .
Towards the end of his final season at Western Michigan, he also played 14 times in the ECHL for the Gwinnett Gladiators , the farm team of the Atlanta Thrashers and the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League . This he left after a year and signed a contract with the AHL farm team of the Carolina Hurricanes , the Albany River Rats , for which he played until 2009. During the 2008–09 season , Dwyer made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Hurricanes. Dwyer has been part of the Hurricanes' NHL squad since the middle of the 2009/10 season.
After the 2014/15 season, his expiring contract was not extended, so he moved to Europe for the first time in October 2015 and joined MODO Hockey from the Svenska Hockeyligan . After a year he returned to North America and spent the 2016/17 season with the Charlotte Checkers from the AHL. He then moved again to the European continent and played the 2017/18 season at SønderjyskE from the Danish Metal Ligaen . In July 2018 he joined the Belfast Giants of the British Elite Ice Hockey League as a playing assistant coach .
