Zsolt Molnár (born August 6, 1987 in Miercurea Ciuc ) is a Romanian ice hockey player who has been under contract at the ASC Corona 2010 Brașov in the MOL league since 2013 .

Career

Club

Zsolt Molnár, who belongs to the Hungarian-speaking Szekler minority in Romania , began his career as a hockey player with HC Csíkszereda in his hometown, for which he competed in the Romanian ice hockey league. With the establishment of the MOL League in 2008, in which Hungarian and Romanian clubs play, he and his club also competed there. With the club from Miercurea Ciuc he became Romanian champion in 2009 and also won the MOL league. After the club was dissolved after the season for financial reasons, the striker moved to local rivals HSC Csíkszereda , the traditional club of the Szeklers. There he was able to win the Romanian championship four times in four years, the MOL league in 2011 and the Romanian cup competition twice (2010 and 2011) . Despite these successes, he left his hometown in 2013 and switched to the reigning cup winner ASC Corona 2010 Brașov . Also with his new club he was Romanian champion straight away, in the MOL league he finished second with Brașov after the final series against HK Nové Zámky from Slovakia had been lost 4-2. Together with five other players he was the second best scorer in the MOL league behind his compatriot Levente Zsók . In 2015 he won the Cup with Brașov and another championship in 2017.

International

In contrast to other Szeklers who play for Hungary , Molnár plays internationally for his native Romania . He was already active in the junior division at world championships. He succeeded with the U-18 selection of the Romanians at the 2003 World Cup, the promotion from Division II to Division I, in which he then played in 2004 . With Romanian U20s he took part in the World Championships in 2004 , 2006 and 2007 in Division II.

He made his debut in the men's national team in November 2008 at the qualifying tournament for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , when the Romanians were bottom of the group at the tournament in Sanok . He was also nominated for the 2009 World Cup , but here too his team was overwhelmed and relegated from Division I after five clear defeats. In the title fights in 2010 and 2011 , Molnár was then on the ice in Division II. After he was promoted again at the 2011 tournament, he competed with Romania in Division I of the World Cup in 2012 and 2013 .

He also played for Romania in the qualifications in November 2012 for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and in February 2016 for the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang .
