The Zimní stadium Ivana Hlinky is an ice rink in the Czech city of Litvínov . It is the home ground of the extra league club HC Verva Litvínov , an ice hockey team and has a capacity of 6,211 spectators. In 2004 the ice arena was renamed Zimní stadion Ivana Hlinky in honor of Ivan Hlinka , a long-time player of the club .

history

Before the construction of the natural ice stadium, ice hockey was played on a former handball court on Neumann-Straße. In 1965, the management of Jiskra Litvínov decided to build an artificial ice stadium at the same location, which was completed after four months of construction. The opening on December 5, 1955 was framed by an ice skating show by the Romanov siblings from Prague. Two days later, on December 7, 1955, the first ice hockey game took place in the stadium. The host club lost 7-1 against the Romanian national ice hockey team .

In the 1960s, the open stadium was rebuilt: First, steel grandstands were built on the north and south sides, which were later supplemented by further grandstands on the east and west sides. In addition, changing rooms were created and preparations were made for a roof. This took place from May to August 1965. The roofing reduced the capacity from 10,000 to around 8,000 spectators, although unofficially up to 8,500 spectators were counted.

In 1979, planning began for a second ice rink, which was completed in 1982 and since then the conditions for training youngsters and public ice skating have improved significantly. In 1995 the ice rink was rebuilt again and a VIP and sponsor area was added. This reduced the capacity to 7,000 spectators, with 2,000 seats available. In the same year the ice surface was renovated and the roof structure was repaired in 2007.

The stadium has been sold out twice since 1995: in the 2006/07 season against HC Sparta Prague and in the 2008/09 season against HC Slavia Prague . HC Litvínov had the highest average attendance in the 2004/05 season , when an average of 5,542 spectators followed the club's home games.
