history

At the beginning of the 20th century, bandy was played in Pilsen rather than ice hockey . In 1909 the Club Union was founded, which played against teams from Strakonice and Písek , among others . From 1917 the sport became more popular and other clubs such as SK Smichov Pilsen , Český lev and 1. ČLTK Plzeň emerged. Ten years later, in 1929, a department for ice hockey was founded within the student club SK Viktoria Plzeň , which is considered to be the origin of today's HC Plzeň. Players at this time were Průcha, Šalda, Binder, Diviš and Čechura. In 1948 the club was renamed Sokol Plzeň IV and played with players like Plochý, Volráb, Liškové, Švajner and Nekola.

From 1949 the first team took part in the regional ice hockey championship, with the home games taking place on the former cattle market, where an open ice rink with an artificial ice surface was built. In 1951, the team, which included players like Vybíral, Trhlík, Šmat, Havlíček, Petr, Krauz, Radič, Brand and Šašek, made it to the top division of Czechoslovakia , the first division. In the following years, the team from Pilsen established itself in the league and finished the 1956/57 season in third place. In addition, some players (Šašek, Vinš, Václav and Sventek) from Spartak , as the club was called since 1952, were appointed to the Czechoslovak national team to take part in the 1957 World Cup in Moscow . There the selection team won the bronze medal. In the following two seasons Spartak Plzeň took second place in the championship and thus the runner-up title.

1960s and 1970s

In the early 1960s, the team from Pilsen could not build on these successes and in 1966 even rose to the 2nd division. In 1968 the open ice rink was roofed over and since then has offered a spectator capacity of approx. 8000. A year later, the promotion to the first division was achieved when VŽKG Ostrava , AŠ Mladá Boleslav and IS Banská Bystrica were left behind in the relegation . The promotion team included players like Bednář, Neubauer, Huml and Jonák, while Bohuslav Ebermann and Milan Kajkl , who also came from the club, with HC Dukla Jihlava became champions of the ČSSR. At the end of the 1970/71 season, Škoda Plzeň was only in last place in the table and was relegated again to the second division. But already a year later the promotion followed, when Slavia Prague was left behind in the relegation .

In the 1970s, Škoda Plzeň placed mostly in the back of the table, before even relegation to the second division (Czech national league) followed in 1978. But just a year later, the team rose again to the top division when they defeated Spartak ZŤS Dubnica , the winner of the Slovak national league, 3-1 in four games in the relegation (in front of up to 10200 spectators). Since then, the team from Pilsen has played continuously in the top division of the ČSSR, ČSFR and the Czech Republic. The club again reached the runner-up title in the 1991/92 season.

Since 1990

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the name of the association changed frequently, as the main sponsor of the association was included in the name. Between 1994 and 1995 the club was called HC Interconex Plzeň , then HC ZKZ Plzeň , from 1997 HC Keramika Plzeň and since 2004 HC Lasselsberger Plzeň . The club's best placement since the establishment of the Czech Extra League was third place in the 1999/2000 season . Between 2004 and 2008, however, Pilsen never reached the playoffs, and it was not until the 2008/09 season that Martin Straka's team made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs. In 2013 they became Czech champions for the first time. The championship title was decided in the 7th game in the second extension. Martin Straka scored the decisive goal in the 96:15 minute.

Well-known former players

Home ground

In 1950, an open ice rink was opened on a former cattle market in Pilsen, which had an artificial ice rink and could accommodate up to 14,000 spectators. This maximum number of spectators was only reached once, when the AIK Stockholm came up as a visiting team in Pilsen in 1950 . In 1959 the ice rink in Pilsen was the venue for the B world championship , which was won by the B national team of Czechoslovakia. In 1968 the open stadium was roofed over and now offers 8,211 spectators. HC Plzeň achieved the best attendance average in its history in the 1969/70 season, when an average of 9,930 spectators followed the club's home games.

Since the founding of the Extraliga, the average attendance has been between 4,000 and 7,000. At the end of the 1990s, when HC Keramika Plzeň played most successfully, the stadium was sold out five times. In 2006 the stadium was renamed ČEZ Aréna. In addition to the ČEZ Aréna, the club has another ice rink available for training purposes, which can seat 170 spectators.
