Hybristophilia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hybristophilia (from the Greek ὑβριστής hybristes "malefactor", and φιλία philia "friendship, affection") is a paraphilia , which consists in the fact that those affected by criminals , in particular offenders in the areas of sexual , serious violence and homicide , sexually feel attracted. It is also known as Bonnie and Clyde syndrome .

Affected and causes

Women are affected more often than men. There is little empirical research on the causes of hybristophilia. Loneliness, low self-esteem and the desire for attention are mentioned as possible reasons. Since serial and mass murderers in particular - especially in the USA - often become celebrities in popular culture , it is also assumed that those affected seek proximity to the criminal in order to become famous themselves.

According to Sheila Isenberg , the women affected are often those who had a difficult childhood, i. H. abused or ill-treated . In her book Women Who Love Men Who Kill , she advocates the thesis that these women are therefore looking for a man they can control and who cannot hurt them: men who sit behind bars are particularly suitable for this.

Two types of hybristophilia are described. In the passive form, those affected feel sexually attracted to criminals without the desire to participate in the partner's crimes. In the case of active hybristophilia, the person concerned incites their partner to commit crimes, aids or accomplices because they experience sexual arousal as a result.

It is a potentially harmful paraphilia for those affected, since contact with criminals exposes them to the risk of becoming victims themselves.
