Radek Martínek (born August 31, 1976 in Havlíčkův Brod , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who was active for many years with the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League .
Career
The 1.83 m tall defender first played for his hometown club HC Rebel Havlíčkův Brod and later for HC Vajgar Hradec in the second-rate Czech 1st division before moving to the first division club HC České Budějovice in 1996 . In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft , the right-handed shooter was finally selected ( drafted ) as 228th in the eighth round by the Islanders .
After two more seasons in his home country, Martínek moved to North America in 2001 , where he was on the ice for the New York Islanders in the NHL for the first time. Right from the start, the Czech was part of the Islanders' regular squad , and the defender spent the lockout in the 2004/05 season again at HC České Budějovice, who was playing in the first division at the time.
On July 6, 2011, the Czech signed a one-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets . Due to a serious injury, he only played seven games in the 2011/12 season.
Due to the lock-out at the beginning of the 2012/13 season, he returned to his home club, but only made four games for the club. In January 2013 he signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders. This was not renewed after the 2013/14 season, so from July 2014 he was looking for a new employer as a free agent . Since he did not find it, he ended his career.
International
With the Czech national team , Radek Martínek was ice hockey world champion in 2000 and 2001 . In 2011 he was nominated again for the World Cup but only used in one game.
