Canararctia rufescens (depending on the opinion also Rhyparia rufescens ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae).

description

The wingspan is 48 to 66 millimeters. The color is variable and ranges from gray-brown, through brown to reddish brown. The male has double-combed antennae and is significantly smaller than the female. On the front edge of the forewings there are four dark spots at approximately the same distance. There is also a small, black discal spot. The hind wings are generally the same color as the forewings, but are a little lighter.

Similar species

The purple bear differs from the species Canararctia rufescens, which was previously also part of Rhyparia , by its red, black- spotted hind wings. The forewings also show clear differences with numerous black spots.

Occurrence

The species occurs only on the Canary Islands La Gomera and Tenerife . It is widespread and occurs from around sea level to over 1,000 meters in the cultivated land and in gardens as well as in laurel forests , which are believed to be the original habitat of the species.

Flight time

The species flies in several generations for most of the year. The animals are nocturnal and fly to artificial light sources .

Way of life

The caterpillars feed polyphagous on various plants. Are safe is, inter alia, Myrica faya , Rumex lunaria , Kleinia neriifolia , castor bean ( Ricinus communis ), Nicotiana glauca ( Nicotiana glauca ), Sonchus congestus and various crops .
