The Notre Dame Stadium is a college football - stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame , just north of the US city of South Bend in the state of Indiana . It opened in 1930 and is primarily used as the venue for the football games of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish , who, as independents in the NCAA, create their own schedule.

history

The stadium opened on October 4, 1930 to replace the old Cartier Field . The total construction costs amounted to 750,000 US dollars . The original audience capacity was 54,000. Knute Rockne played a key role in stadium design, keeping the space between the playing field and the stands to a minimum. The stadium was modeled on Michigan Stadium on a smaller scale . Over the years the audience capacity has increased continuously to 59,075. In 1997, 21,000 new seats were built and the audience capacity increased to the current 80,795. From the opening, the playing area consisted of natural grass . Before the 2014 season, artificial turf (FieldTurf) was laid on the pitch .

Notre Dame Stadium was selected to host the 2019 NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins on January 1st of that year.
