Brian Gerard James (born May 20, 1969 in Marietta , Georgia ) is an American wrestler . He held a number of titles and spent most of his career in the WWF / WWE . There he works as an agent and producer. He made his most famous appearances as the manager of Jeff Jarrett and in the WWE tag team scene, especially as a member of the New Age Outlaws .

Career

The beginnings

Armstrong comes from a traditional family in this regard. His father, Bob Armstrong, was a well-known wrestler in the 1960s and 1970s under the name "The Bullet". His brothers Scott, Steve and Brad are or have been in this profession. After graduating from high school, he trained as a wrestler from his father and brothers. In 1993 he made his professional debut. Together with his brothers Steve and Scott he was successful at Smoky Mountain Wrestling and the USWA . After a brief attempt to get a job with the WCW , he ended up with the WWF at the end of 1994.

World Wrestling Federation (1994-2000)

At first he suffered the same fate as the future Raven . Although he was a wrestler, he was initially only hired as a ring companion. In this case for Jeff Jarrett , whom he helped to dubious victories as his “roadie”. It is also thanks to Armstrong that Jarrett won the WWE Intercontinental Championship title from Razor Ramon ( Scott Hall ) at the 1995 Royal Rumble and was able to defend it successfully in the following years. At the King of the Ring of the same year Armstrong was finally granted the opportunity to get into the wrestling ring himself. After winning the tournament against Doink the Clown and Bob Holly ( Hardcore Holly ) he had to admit defeat to Savio Vega in the semifinals.

The following month, Jeff Jarrett fell out with the WWE and Armstrong fell out with Jarrett. A battle of words was staged to explain Jarrett's actual WWE exit. Armstrong also disappeared from the scene - allegedly because of drug problems. He used the one-year federation break for flying visits to American independent leagues (including the USWA , where he was Tag Team Champion) and the European CWA .

In October 1996 Armstrong returned to WWE as "Real Double J" after it was claimed that Jarrett did not sing his hit "With my baby tonight" himself but had Armstrong sing it. Although his musical interpretations sounded good and he set the mood on the microphone, the gimmick was unsuccessful. A year as a high-class jobber for the superstars followed.

Shortly before the end of 1997 came the surprising turnaround. Armstrong teamed up with Billy Gunn , who also had to eke out an existence in the undercard, and formed the tag team New Age Outlaws . With provocations, cheeky outfits and sayings as well as not very clean action in and around the ring, success was finally with them. After winning the elimination match at the Survivor Series , they were able to defeat the Legion of Doom a little later and became WWE Tag Team Champions. At the following two major events, they were able to successfully defend the title against this team. After skirmishes against Mankind and Chainsaw Charlie ( Terry Funk ), the outlaws had to risk their Wrestlemania 1998 title against them in a "dumpster match". They lost the fight, but a day later they got the belts back in a steel cage fight. At the same time they did with Triple H and X-Pac ( Sean Waltman together) and were then on the D-Generation X . They retained and defended their titles until the end of the year. Only in the summer did they briefly lose them to Kane and Mankind, but brought them back a little later at the summerslam . At RAW on the day after December - " In Your House " they finally lost them to the Big Bossman and Ken Shamrock .

After this time, attempts were made to establish both Gunn and Armstrong as successful individual wrestlers. The Road Dogg was able to win the WWE Hardcore title in the following years, which he lost to Al Snow after a while . Shortly afterwards he defeated the reigning Intercontinental Champion Val Venis and went into the championship match of Wrestlemania as the title holder . Here he had to admit defeat to Goldust . After a last match as New Age Outlaws and the win against Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett, the separation took place. Gunn turned away from his partner and defeated him at May - In your House. Armstrong went solo again, reached the semi-finals at the King of the Ring, played the special referee in the hardcore title match at Summerslam and took on newcomer Chris Jericho , to whom he was defeated in the England - PPV Rebellion.

After a short break, the New Age Outlaws and a little later also the D-Generation X reunited with Billy Gunn in autumn 1999. After a short tag team - title feud against The Rock and Mankind, they were able to win the latter and Al Snow in November of that year Take off your belt for good and hold it until 2000. After defenses against the aforementioned teams and the Acolytes ( Bradshaw and Faarooq ), they had to irrevocably surrender the title to the Dudley Boys. Billy Gunn also suffered a serious shoulder injury, which forced him to take a break of several months and the team with Armstrong blew up.

From then on, X-Pac took his place at the side of the Road Dogg and, supported by Valet Tori, they competed against Kane and Rikishi , Too Cool, Test & Albert, Edge & Christian and for the titles with the Dudley Boys. Persistent defeats and internal competition ultimately led to tension and a match between the two at Summerslam 2000. This decided X-Pac unfairly for itself and the team split up. After that, Armstrong was back on the decline. One last big run in the tag team scene opened up for him in the team with K-Kwik ( Ron Killings ). But despite the hip hop gimmick, the team went for a swim and was defeated in both the Survivor Series and Armageddon in a four corner tag team match. This was also Armstrong's last WWE match. The drug problems that had accompanied his entire career bothered him again. He was released from the WWE and toured the independent scene again.

TNA Wrestling

During this time he only drew attention to himself by auctioning himself on Ebay . After a few guest appearances at the WWA , where he was defeated by Jeff Jarrett in a title match , he finally came to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling . After the initial gimmick of 3-Live Kru (3LK, with Ron Killings and Konnan ), the reunification with Billy Gunn under the name "The James Gang" took place here.

At TNAW he formed the Voodoo Kin Mafia together with Kip James . The stable was built as a counterpart to the D-Generation X of the WWE and parodied it regularly. The “One Million Dollar Challenge”, which was about the fact that the VKM wanted to have an unsettled fight against the DX, was not answered by the DX / WWE.

On September 15, 2009, James was released from TNA. He then appeared again in the independent scene.

WWE

James returned to WWE on October 10, 2011 as an agent and producer, but initially only on probation. He returned to WWE TV at the Slammy Awards in RAW on December 12, 2011. He made his wrestling comeback at the Royal Rumble in 2012.

On January 26, 2014, he won the WWE Tag Team Championship at the Royal Rumble with Billy Gunn .
