action

Jimmy and Paul are New York police officers and ensure order and security. When they try to use a drug dealer as an informant , he is killed. However, the killer can escape. Jimmy and Paul are then suspended from duty .

In order to be able to pay for the dream wedding for his daughter, Jimmy has to part with his precious Andy Pafko baseball card. When selling the card to a sports retailer, however, his business is robbed by the petty crook Dave. Paul, who suspects that his wife is having an affair, does not notice anything of this robbery at first, although he is standing in front of the shop and talking on the phone during the robbery because he is too busy with himself.

Based on the attacker's tattoo, which Jimmy was able to memorize during the attack, Jimmy and Paul then locate the tattoo studio where the tattoo came from. They interrogate the tattooist using not entirely legal methods , who then tells them about Dave's next break-in target. In this way the two manage to arrest Dave, but they learn that he has already sold the card for drugs to the merciless gang boss Poh Boy, who is an avid collector of baseball rarities. To get the card back from Poh Boy, they both enter into a deal. You need to find a car that was stolen from Poh Boy.

To get information on the whereabouts of the car, Jimmy and Paul grab the "biggest car thief in Brooklyn," Tommy, an 11-year-old boy, red-handed. He tells them that the car was sold to a lawyer. Jimmy and Paul drive to the lawyer and fake hostage-taking. So they get the stolen Mercedes from the lawyer. Shortly afterwards, they are pursued by Poh Boy's men, but they can hang out in a cemetery, where the pursuers have an accident and one of the inmates dies. Instead of taking the car to Poh Boy, they search him and find Gabriela, a Mexican woman, bound and gagged in the trunk. Since she only speaks Spanish, there are various communication problems.

Meanwhile, their eager colleagues, Hunsaker and Mangold, are investigating the drug scene. They discover that the dead man in the cemetery - Poh Boy's little brother - had a gun registered on Paul with him. To tell Jimmy, they ask him to meet. Paul should take care of Gabriela during this time. Because she likes him, but puts him in danger with her presence, she escapes unnoticed, but leaves a USB stick with information about the suppliers of Poh Boy's competitors. Jimmy and Paul realize that Poh Boys' goal is not Gabriela but the stick.

During the funeral of Poh Boy's little brother, Jimmy and Paul try to break into his house and steal the trading card. To do this, they are getting Dave out of jail. He is supposed to use his skills in parkour to get into an open window on the 1st floor, but slips, hits his head and dies. Now Jimmy has no choice but to get on board himself. While he's at the house, Poh Boy's gang returns from the funeral. You have Gabriela with you. Paul, who is waiting in the car, does not notice this because he is watching a video from his bedroom that he is monitoring his wife.

Meanwhile, Mangold and Hunsaker decide to interrogate Poh Boy. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Paul can lure most of Poh Boy's gang to a bogus exchange location (Gabriela and the card against the stick). Meanwhile, Mangold and Hunsaker come to Poh Boy's house. There is a shootout in which Hunsaker and Paul are shot. Poh Boy and his men are killed and Gabriela is freed.

Jimmy examines Poh Boy's body. Paul brags about shooting Poh Boy right in the heart. Jimmy finds the card in his breast pocket - with a straight bullet hole.

Finally, Jimmy's daughter's wedding takes place. Her stepfather paid the costs. His ex-wife asks Jimmy to take his daughter to the altar with her stepfather. However, Paul can prevent this and so Jimmy gives his daughter to the groom alone.

In one scene in the credits, the supposed corpse of Dave is brought into a cold room. There he makes himself noticeable and is freed from the body bag by the terrified autopsy assistant.

For director Kevin Smith it was not only the most commercially successful film to date, but also the first film of his career that he did not write the screenplay himself. The script was included in the 2008 “Black List”, a list of the best scripts that have not yet been implemented.

Kevin Smith stated in several interviews and live performances that he couldn't get along with Bruce Willis. He was bothered by both his arrogance and the fact that the film didn't interest him.

Soundtrack

Kevin Smith wanted Harold Faltermeyer to be the composer of the soundtrack because he believed that the film , which was designed as an homage to the crime comedies of the 1980s, needed one of the most prominent film musicians in the genre. Although Faltermeyer was already retired, he joined the film project after seeing a first rough cut of the film.

reception

The film received mostly bad reviews. Even if it was benevolently recognized that the film was an homage to the buddy movies of the 1980s, the “rough” and “sordid” humor was also emphasized.

"After the somewhat different buddy movies Jay and Silent Bob strike back and Zack & Miri Make A Porno this time Kevin Smith presents a completely classic: white cop / black cop, 'good' cop / 'bad' cop, young cop / old cop. As expected, Smith pokes fun at all sorts of other (police) films and plays one gag after the other. Unfortunately, these are rarely funny and hardly make the overall dispensable performance more interesting. [...] (Bruce) Willis never looked so listless during a screen shootout [...]. "

- filmstarts.de

“Although Kevin Smith did not film his own screenplay for the first time with 'Cop Out - Loaded and Unlocked', he still manages to bring a turbulent comedy full of madness and action onto our screens. A lot of depth should not be expected, but brisk entertainment that is fun. "

- Moviesection.de

“Cop Out is a half-baked mix of parody, epigone and throwback in classic buddy movie clichés, but without ever reaching the level of a Lethal Weapon or Die Hard 3. This is primarily due to the poor script, which clearly shows that Smith was not responsible for the dialogue. "

- Moviepilot .de

“The attempt to stage a buddy cop action film in the spirit of the genre role models of the 1990s fails: as a homage in the action sequences, staged too amateurishly, as a satirical without self-referential joke and ironic distance, the comedy turns out to be little entertaining. "

With an overall rating of 19 percent, the film is considered " rotten " by Rotten Tomatoes .
