biography

Until 1998 - the early years

Aronoff grew up in Massachusetts and was self-taught in his first band at the age of ten . At the age of sixteen he initially focused on classical music and played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra . After graduating from Indiana University in 1976, he moved to the East Coast , where he studied drums in Boston and New York ; there he concentrated on jazz and fusion . In 1977 he moved back to Bloomington and played in a well-known local band with whom he toured the entire Midwest. In 1980 he joined John Mellencamp's band, with whom he questioned the recording techniques for the snare drum and all of the drums, thus helping to define the style of Mellencamp's music - with which he has recorded ten albums since then and toured together until 1997.

Since 1998 - without Mellencamp

In 1988 Mellencamp took a long hiatus, and Aronoff was poorly groomed because of his divorce at the time, which is why he moved to Los Angeles . There the producer Don Was got him studio recordings with Iggy Pop , Bob Dylan , Bob Seger , Elton John and Glen Frey , which brought him a career boost.

From 1993 to 1997 he taught percussion as an associate professor at Indiana University . Currently he is u. a. to be heard on the studio recordings of John Fogerty , Tony Iommi , Melissa Etheridge , Meat Loaf , Avril Lavigne and Rod Stewart , also live with The Smashing Pumpkins , Bob Seger and Joe Cocker . Aronoff has been voted number one pop / rock drummer and studio drummer for five years in a row by Readers of Modern Drummer magazine, and has played on over 30 Grammy-nominated recordings. On the tour for the album Chickenfoot III he played with the band Chickenfoot , as original drummer Chad Smith had to fulfill tour obligations with Red Hot Chili Peppers .

Aronoff married his wife Georgina on August 18, 2012 at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Hollywood , best man was Glenn Hughes .

In 2016, Rolling Stone listed Aronoff as 66th of the 100 best drummers of all time .
