BK3 is the third solo album released in 2010 by Bruce Kulick , the guitarist of the US band Grand Funk Railroad . Kulick sings five of the eleven tracks himself, five more are sung by other artists. The album also includes an instrumental piece written by Kulick and recorded with Steve Lukather (guitar; Toto ), jazz bassist Jimmy Haslip and Kenny Aronoff ( drums ; for John Mellencamp and John Fogerty , among others ).

background

The album was recorded over a total of fifty days in various studios in the Los Angeles area. Kulick began working on the drum tracks , which were recorded by Brent Fitz , his bandmate from Union . Since Kulick and co-producer Jeremy Rubolino had thoroughly prepared all demos and were able to work with the Pro Tools program , it was easy for Fitz to record four tracks on the first day of recording; The drum tracks for ten tracks were already recorded on the second day.

The bass tracks for many of the songs were recorded by Kulick himself; Rubolino also took on this task in some cases. Other well-known musicians who supported Kulick with the recording were Eric Singer , who played drums for the song I'm the Animal sung by Tobias Sammet , the singer of The Knack , Doug Fieger ( Dirty Girl ), Kiss , who died shortly after the recording -Bassist Gene Simmons ( Ain't Gonna Die ) and his son Nick ( Hand of the King ), as well as Kulick's partner in founding Union, John Corabi , who wrote the song No Friend of Mine with him and took over the vocals. Kulick also recorded an instrumental track ( Between the Lines ) on which Steve Lukather also played guitar. Jimmy Haslip (bass) and Kenny Aronoff (drums) also took part in the recording .

reception

In a review of the German magazine Rock Hard , it was alluded to Kulick's time as a guitarist by Kiss and it was suggested that the band's fans were a guarantee of good sales for Kulick's product as well.

" To assume that Mr. Kulick is cynical, because the singer on the album in addition to Schlabberzunge Gene Simmons ('Ain't Gonna Die') also his son ('Hand Of The King') and Eric Singer (together with Tobias Sammet on ' I'm The Animal ') would do the album an injustice, because tracks like the brisk' Uplifting 'or the atmospheric' No Friend Of Mine '(with John Corabi on mic) are beyond criticism and prove that it is Kulick "BK3" is primarily about living out your own musical ideas. Hard rock and classic rock fans can note the album on their shopping list. "

- Thomas Kupfer : Review

Allmusic reviewer Greg Prato said that in the “wake of the latest releases from the Kiss environment” ( Ace Frehley's Anomaly and Kiss's own work Sonic Boom , both 2009) Kulick was “clearly on the road to victory” .

Alexander Kolbe from Rocks magazine awarded four out of six achievable points and noted that even if Kulick would “not become a gifted singer in this life” , “he looks better than the Kiss number› I Walk Alone ‹(from Carnival of Souls)“ .
