biography

Doug Fieger grew up in his native Oak Park, Michigan, where he attended Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School and Oak Park High School . He had an older brother and a younger sister. In 1964 Fieger began playing the guitar. The Beatles , who dominated the world of popular music at that time , had a great influence on the young Fieger . About two years later he formed the band Sky with his friend John Corey . The group released two albums on the RCA Records label in 1970 ( Don't Hold Back and Sailor's Delight ). During this time, Fieger moved from Michigan to California. After the band split up, he stayed in California, where he worked on his musical career for the next few years. In the following years he first met the drummer Bruce Gary , then the guitarist Berton Averre. With the latter he began to compose songs together. The three recorded demos but were rejected by record companies for years.

In May 1978 Prescott Niles completed the band on bass that was now called The Knack . This was followed by a large number of appearances in clubs, the first of which took place in the well-known Whiskey a Go-Go . About a year later, the group received a recording deal with Capitol Records . The first album Get the Knack and the debut single My Sharona were released in June 1979 and were successful in the charts worldwide. The inspiration for the piece was the then 17-year-old Sharona Alperin , with whom Fieger fell in love. The two had a four-year relationship. Two more albums followed in 1980 and 1981 before the group separated for the first time. Ten years later the fourth album was released, followed by another break of several years before the fifth Knack album was released in 1998. In 2000 Fieger released his solo album First Things First . The Knack's last studio album to date followed in 2001.

In 2004, doctors found malignant tumors in Fieger's lungs . He had an operation, but the disease was diagnosed too late. The cancer had spread and reached the brain. Another operation followed in August 2006 and two brain metastases were removed from Fieger . In October 2007, more tumors were removed.

Fieger died on February 14, 2010 after fighting lung cancer for many years . His last recording was released on Bruce Kulick's 2010 album BK3 , on which Fieger sang the title Dirty Girl .
