The Knack was an American rock band. Their music is heavily influenced by rock 'n' roll and the great bands of the 1960s ; In particular, influences of the Beatles , the Kinks or the Byrds are recognizable. The Knack was one of the groups whose music brought a departure from the disco music that had dominated until then . Their sound has been described as power pop . The musical heads of the group were Doug Fieger and Berton Averre, who composed most of the songs.

Band history

The group was founded in May 1978 by Doug Fieger (* August 20, 1952 in Detroit , Michigan ; † February 14, 2010), Berton Averre (* December 13, 1953 in Van Nuys , California ), Prescott Niles (* May 2, 2010) 1954 in New York , NY ) and Bruce Gary (born April 7, 1951 in Burbank , California, † August 22, 2006 in Tarzana , California).

The band had first successes with performances in clubs in Los Angeles . In 1979 they signed a recording deal with Capitol Records . Their first album - entitled Get the Knack - was developed by Mike Chapman produced , which is already known as a hit producer of groups like The Sweet and Blondie had made. The released single My Sharona , which was named after Fieger's muse Sharona Alperin , became a worldwide hit.

Two more albums followed, but they could not continue the success of the debut. After the release of the third album Round Trip in 1981, the group split. In 1986/87 the band got together again for a few gigs, but this reunion did not last. In addition, no new studio material was recorded. In 1991 the band made another attempt - but with a different line-up, since Billy Ward now took over the drums . The result was the album Serious Fun, produced by Don Was . Another hiatus followed, and it was not until 1998 that the next album, Zoom , was released, this time with Terry Bozzio on drums. The CD Normal as the Next Guy followed in 2001 as the last studio production to date . In 2002 the group's previous albums were re-released in remastered versions.

In 2006, drummer Bruce Gary died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma . Singer Doug Fieger died on February 14, 2010 after a long battle with lung cancer . Fieger's last recording was released on Bruce Kulick's 2010 album BK3 , on which Fieger sings the title Dirty Girl .
