background

Avril Lavigne live in the Canadian city of Vancouver in 2004

Avril Lavigne wrote most of her second album with the Canadian composer Chantal Kreviazuk . The song Nobody's Home was created with the help of ex- Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody , the rest with her former guitarist Evan Taubenfeld . As producers could Butch Walker of Marvelous 3, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace and Don Gilmore are obtained, which is already Good Charlotte and Linkin Park has produced.

The songs on the album are mostly about love as well as negative and positive feelings. Most of the album was kept very rocky (for example Take Me Away , Nobody's Home ), but there are also quieter, more poppy ballads: How Does It Feel, for example. Lavigne appears as a songwriter on all songs. She is also noticeable as a composer in many songs. B. the guitar part in the song Slipped Away itself. Lavigne wrote the lyrics during her 2003 Try to Shut Me Up tour . So the song is How Does It Feel z. B. from the feeling of complete isolation, just during a tour where you are completely on your own, at least as a solo artist. The song deals with these feelings.

Single releases

Don't tell me

This song is the first single from the album. It's about a girl who refuses a boy's attempt to have sex with her. With the song, Avril Lavigne returned to the charts , reaching number one in several countries and number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

My happy ending

The album's second single, My Happy Ending , was featured on the radio in June 2004 and hit stores on August 2, 2004. The song was number one in the world charts (Worldwide Airplay) for several weeks and was among the top five in the USA (Airplay two), Great Britain and other European countries. It reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The RIAA awarded the single gold in mid-November 2004 and platinum at the end of January 2005.

Nobody's Home

The third single Nobody's Home also did quite well, achieved a high level of airplay but did not make it into the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, instead falling back to number 41. In Canada, however, the single was one of their best in fourth place and also reached number one in South Africa.

He wasn't

He Wasn't was the fourth single in Europe. She was ranked 23rd in the UK and 92nd in her native Canada. A CD single was released in the United States, however.

Fall to Pieces

Fall to Pieces was Avril Lavigne's fifth single (in the USA this came instead of the fourth single He wasn't ) as a promo CD, it was only available on the North American continent and was otherwise only released on the radio. In contrast to the other singles, she was more of a flop in the USA and reached number seven in Canada.

Musical details

  • Take Me Away: On this song, Avril Lavigne usually plays rhythm guitar at concerts. However, it only accompanies the refrain. From mid-2005, after about half of the Bonez tour, she no longer accompanied the song. She accompanied the song with Evan Taubenfeld on acoustic sets and on the promotion tour of the mall for Under My Skin in the USA in spring 2004.
  • Together: Lavigne played three versions live: In early 2004 she always played the song alone with an acoustic guitar (example: appearance at the Much Music Awards 2004). At the end of 2004, but not yet during the Bonez tour 2004 - Eyes, she played the song without any accompaniment, i.e. only vocals (examples here are e.g. the appearance at Rock am Ring 2004 or Summer Sonic Osaka 2004). From the beginning of the Bonez Tour 2004 - Eyes - or Bonez Tour 2005, Lavigne said he had practiced enough piano to accompany the song on a piano. She did this until the end of the Bonez tour in 2005.
  • Don't Tell Me : This song was accompanied by Lavigne with an electric guitar from the very beginning, whether as an acoustic version or "normal". Until about mid-2005 she played the song entirely with a rhythm guitar. But then she switched to lead guitar and only played the chorus and bridge because the sound would have been too loud and rough for the verses.
  • He Wasn't : Initially played with a solo (at the beginning of the song) by Lavigne. But then she only played the chorus and the bridge. At the end of the Bonez tour in 2005, she sang the song without any instruments.
  • How Does It Feel ?: This song has never been played live before. When asked why, Lavigne replied that the song was just too emotional, too calm and too complicated to play. Due to the numerous cello, percussion and violin interludes, the song is actually extremely complicated and is not really suitable as an "up-tempo" number.
  • My Happy Ending : Lavigne always played all verses with an electric guitar from early 2004 to early 2005. But from about halfway through the 2004/2005 Bonez tour, she began to accompany the song only in the chorus, intro and bridge in order to make the verses seem “fuller”.
  • Nobody's Home : On the promotion tour Mall tour and on the Bonez tour 2004 (except in 2005) Avril Lavigne always played the song with the band. But from the middle of the Bonez tour in 2005 she always played the song as a solo. At the end (at the last chorus) the whole band started (unexpectedly from the audience).
  • Forgotten: The song was always played alone on the piano accompanied by Lavigne's band throughout the tour.
  • Fall to Pieces: Lavigne played the song at concerts in 2004 always alone with an acoustic guitar without accompaniment. But in 2005 she sang the song only with the accompaniment of the band.
  • Who Knows ?: Lavigne always played acoustic guitar on this track. She only sang the song when she performed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. The reason for this was that in the stadium, due to the size etc., not the entire band could play and therefore a playback (only music) had to be played.
  • Freak Out: Lavigne sang with the band throughout the tour.
  • Slipped Away: The song was initially played with Lavigne accompanied by the band. Then Lavigne always played the song alone at the piano at the end of a concert. But from about halfway through the tour she stopped playing the song for personal reasons.
