Rock n Roll is a song by the Canadian singer Avril Lavigne . It was released as the second single from their upcoming fifth studio album on August 27, 2013 by Sony Music Entertainment.

The song was written by Lavigne, David Hodges, Chad Kröger , Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Rickard B Göransson and Peter Svensson and produced by Peter Svensson.

Rock n Roll is a happy pop-punk song. Lyrically it is a declaration of rebellion in which the singer "holds out her middle finger to the sky to let her know that she is still rock'n'roll " and refuses to act like an adult. The song received praise from music critics and was highlighted as one of the most standout tracks on the album. “Rock n Roll” performed moderately in the charts, reaching number one in South Korea and Taiwan and number five in Japan . The song also reached number 37 in Canada and number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100 hit list.

Music video

Chris Marrs Piliero's music video shows Lavigne in battle mode plotting to "save rock and roll" with Danica McKellar (best known for her role as Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years ).

The music video opens with a promo for the Sony Xperia Z1 that includes a reference to one of Lavigne's earliest hits, " Sk8er Boi, " in which the singer recites some of the lyrics over the phone. When she hangs up, the phone screen shows the opening scene of the plot, in which Lavigne is dressed in military clothes and is dancing in front of a restaurant and vehicle. The theme of the video revolves around the singer and her crew taking on the mission "Saving Rock N Roll". An attack by bear-shark hybrids called "bear-sharks" threatens the very existence of rock n roll. The bear shark kills the character that Billy Zane represents. Lavigne has an appointment with her friend in a restaurant. There she can unmask a "bear shark", but it manages to escape.

After leaving the diner, the singer, her friend and her dog follow the bear shark. During the chase, the drunk dog crashes the car into a tree and dies. After a dialogue between Lavigne and her friend, they mourn the dog, agree that everything will be fine, and then kiss. During the dog's funeral, Lavigne opens a magical guitar from his coffin, on which she plays the song's guitar riff in the front yard of a church (inspired by the Guns N 'Roses music video, " November Rain, " where Slash shows up and a solo with his Playing guitar in front of a church). Then she uses the guitar to kill the bear shark. After her win, Lavigne receives a thumbs-up from Billy Zane, who flies in the sky on a Segway . She smiles and raises her guitar to the sky. The picture becomes a drawing, and the credits follow.

Live performances

On September 26, 2013 Lavigne performed the song on the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show to a large audience in front of the studio. During the performance Lavigne was dressed in a black and silver “pop-punk splendor”, while her backround dancers - and the giant bear shark from her video - performed on a jeep. Well-timed smoke bombs punctuated the title's performance.

On September 30, 2013 Lavigne played the single on the Queen Latifah Show . Idolator's Mike Wass commented that the singer performed the song for “a far from appreciative audience” and praised Lavigne, who “looked and sounded great but was hard to watch as she ode an ode never to grow up, while the crowd clapped like parishioners.
