Glenn Lewis Frey (born November 6, 1948 in Detroit , Michigan , † January 18, 2016 in New York City , New York ) was an American rock musician . He was co-founder of the internationally very successful formation Eagles in the 1970s , of which he belonged until his death. He was also successful as a soloist and has been a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame since 2000 .

Life

Frey's great love has always been rock and roll and Motown music. He was a friend and protégé of Bob Seger . He has played guitar and piano with the Eagles since their inception, and was usually the lead vocalist on the tracks he wrote himself . Frey co-wrote her first hit, Take It Easy , alongside US songwriter Jackson Browne . However, Frey wrote most of the Eagles' songs together with Don Henley , developed over the years to a central figure in writing and composing, and with Henley formed the head of the band.

After the Eagles dissolved in 1981, Frey was successful as a solo artist. His first single I Found Somebody and the album No Fun Aloud were released in May 1982 . With the song The Heat Is On , which hit the charts in Germany and many other parts of Europe at the end of 1984, he became successful beyond the United States. The title appeared on the soundtrack of the American movie Beverly Hills Cop and was written by Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey . Other well-known singles in Germany were You Belong to the City and I've Got Mine . He contributed Smuggler's Blues, written especially for the series, to the American crime series Miami Vice . In the eponymous 15th episode of the first season of the series (German follow-up title Adventure in Colombia ) Frey played with himself.

Frey can be seen in a few American films (e.g. Jerry Maguire ) in supporting roles. He had a leading role in several episodes of the series Wiseguy , which was called Fight Against the Mafia in Germany and ran on RTL and RTL II in the early 1990s . It was about a fictional sub-organization of the FBI , the "OCB", which was specifically dedicated to the fight against organized crime. Frey played in several episodes that revolve around the music industry, the unsuccessful music manager Bobby Travis, who sells his financially clumsy record label Dead Dog Records to the OCB so that it can henceforth be used as a cover company. The series was popular in the United States, which attracted many guest stars. Frey starred in his episodes with Deborah Harry ( Blondie ) and Tim Curry ( The Rocky Horror Picture Show ) . Other guest stars included Jerry Lewis in one of his few serious roles, as well as Joe Dallesandro , Meat Loaf , Maximilian Schell , Kevin Spacey and Patti D'Arbanville .

After the reunion of the Eagles in 1994, Frey continued to enjoy success as a member. Her last tour took place from 2013 to 2015. After complications from an inflammatory joint disease, Frey died on January 18, 2016 at the age of 67 in New York City of complications from colon inflammation and pneumonia .

Title for television and cinema

His play You Belong to the City has also been featured in the Miami Vice series. The same title can be heard in the series A Terribly Nice Family in the episode Old Times (episode 14 of season 2). The Heat Is On was used as intro music for the film Beverly Hills Cop starring Eddie Murphy , True Love was used in the episode Hostages in the Storm (season 1, episode 12) of Baywatch - The Lifeguards of Malibu .
