The Long Run is the sixth studio album by the American rock band Eagles , released in 1979 . It was the first album after their global success Hotel California and, like their previous records, appeared on their regular label Asylum. The following year the band broke up for the first time.

The album was the fourth in a row to make it to number 1 on the US album charts. The song Heartache Tonight won the 1979 Grammy for best rock performance.
Three singles were released: Heartache Tonight , which was the Eagles' last number 1 hit, and The Long Run , and I Can't Tell You Why ., Both of which reached number 8 on the Billboard charts. Although the reviews weren't good, it sold more than 7 million albums.
Timothy B. Schmit replaced the resigned founding member Randy Meisner on the recordings .
