New Kid in Town is a 1976 song by the Eagles written by Don Henley , Glenn Frey, and JD Souther . It appeared on the Hotel California album .

history

JD Souther initially only wrote the chorus. According to Souther, it was going to be a hit for the band. But he didn't know how to write a complete song. About a year later, Frey and Henley got together to write the songs for the album Hotel California. Souther then presented the chorus to them and the three of them completed the song.

Souther later said that the song came about as a result of her “fascination with gunfire as an analogy” (German: fascination of a gunfire as an analogy) and also wrote the line in the song: “At some point some kid would come riding into town that was much faster than you and he'd say so, and then he'd prove it. ”(German: At some point a child rides through the city who would be much faster than you and would say that it can prove it.) He added added: "We were just writing about our replacements." (German: We wrote about our replacement members.) Henley commented on the meaning in the liner notes of the album The Very Best Of .

“It's about the fleeting, fickle nature of love and romance. It's also about the fleeting nature of fame, especially in the music business. We were basically saying: 'Look, we know we're red hot right now but we also know that somebody's going to come along and replace us - both in music and in love.' ”

“It's about the fleeting impermanent nature of love and romance. It's also about the impermanence of fame and especially in the music business. We basically said, 'Look, we know we're high in the charts right now, but we know we know someone can oust us at any time.' "

The text was rumored to be about Bruce Springsteen and that he wrote the song, which Souther denied.

Eagles biographer Marc Elliot said that New Kid in Town is taking a precise and spectacular moment that each man portrays the pain, jealousy, anger and heartbreaking moment of his girlfriend who thinks another is better. He also added that it also included abstract themes such as the fickle nature of the muses and masses.

On Henley's debut album I Can't Stand Still he alludes to New Kid in Town with the song Johnny Can't Read .

In 2016, Rolling Stone editors rated New Kid in Town as fifth best song, which was lauded as an exquisite piece south of cross-border melancholy with complex overlapping harmonies. Thanks to the composition, the band won the song with the song at the 1978 Grammy Awards in the Best Vocal Arrangement category.

Glenn Frey took on the main vocals, while Don Henley sang the second voice in the song. Randy Meisner played the guitarrón , Don Felder the electric guitar and Joe Walsh the hybrid piano.

It was released on December 2, 1976. The soft rock song was a number one hit in the United States and Canada .
