Prophets of Rage -

Prophets of Rage is the first studio album by the US crossover band Prophets of Rage . It was released on September 15, 2017 via Fantasy Records .

Emergence

As early as November 2016, bassist Tim Commerford announced another release of the band. It should be another EP with five or six self-composed titles. The band wanted to release an EP every six months. After a tour, the musicians met in a rehearsal room to write new songs. On the first day the musicians told themselves that they would not leave the rehearsal room until they had written two songs. The same procedure was followed on the following days, so that after five days the band wrote the basic framework for ten songs. Most of the lyrics were written by rappers B-Real and Chuck D , the rest by Tom Morello and Tim Commerford.

Was taken Prophets of Rage in the A & M Studios in Los Angeles . The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien . The album cover was designed by Shepard Fairey . The band released several music videos . In the clip for the song Unfuck the World led Michael Moore Director. Additional videos were shot for the songs Living on the 110 , Radical Eyes and Hail to the Chief . The latter video shows US Vice President Mike Pence , who is portrayed as the puppeteer of President Donald Trump . As it progresses, the White House becomes Trump Tower . YouTube put an age limit on the video the day after it was published. The band protested against this decision, calling censorship in any form a monstrous violation of freedom of expression .

Unfuck the World is a call to all people who want a fairer world. According to Tom Morello, they should not remain silent and together demand a more sensible order for the world. Politicians would sacrifice the future in the name of short-term monetary gain. The song Legalize Me was originally a song about legalizing marijuana . While writing, a song about the refugee crisis developed from it. It is about the question of what and who is an illegal person.

Living on the 110 addresses the situation of homeless people living below Interstate 110 in Los Angeles . According to Tom Morello, the proportion of homeless people in the US population increased exponentially during Barack Obama's tenure . In general, homelessness is a global problem.

“If Jesus were alive today, he would be there: under Highway 110. He would take care of his flock. These people have become the waste of society. We wanted a song that stood up for them and stood by them. "

- Tom Morello

The Chuck D written Hail to the Chief deals with the machinations of the US Vice President Mike Pence, which he does in the background. Take Me Higher describes the use of drones in cities. While police are using them to monitor, other companies are using drones to deliver toilet paper .

According to Frank Thießies from the German magazine Metal Hammer , the band has “made a debut that, with a refreshing and convincing crossover and all the right basic values, is more than the sum of its parts and differs from the stylistic and thematic uniformity in both guitar music and hip- Hop soothingly drops ”. Thießies awarded six out of seven points. Holger Stratmann from the German magazine Rock Hard praised the band “having formulated their messages quite cleverly” and described Prophets of Rage as “an important, long overdue album”, for which he gave nine out of ten points. Evan Rytlewski from the US online magazine Pitchfork Media was more critical . Everything about this package “feels like it's past its sell-by date” and like the band is “relics of an earlier revolution that has been copied into the present”. The musicians would have "done themselves a disservice by staying so close to the sound of their youth".

Prophets of Rage reached number three in the Swiss and sixth on the British album charts. In Austria the album reached number twelve, in Germany number 14 and in the United States number 16. Prophets of Rage was nominated in the category Best Debut Album at the Metal Hammer Awards 2018 . However, the award went to the band Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons .
