history

Foundation and first EPs

Guitarist Phil Campbell 2018

On the occasion of the 30th birthday of the guitarist Todd Campbell, a band he was friends with gave a concert for him. Todd Campbell performed with his father Phil (then Motörhead ) and his brothers Tyla ( bass , ex- The People the Poet ) and Dane ( drums , ex- Straight Lines ) as well as the singer Neil Starr from the Welsh band Attack! Attack! on. The band jokingly called themselves Phil Campbell's All Starr Band and played covers of songs by the Rolling Stones . More concerts followed, although many organizers did not understand the pun with the singer's family name and announced the band as Phil Campbell's All Star Band . After the death of Motörhead singer Lemmy Kilmister at the end of 2015, the new band began to compose their own songs and finally changed their name to Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons.

Singer Neil Starr 2018

In summer 2016 the band played at Wacken Open Air and Bloodstock Open Air . In the latter, the band played the Motörhead song Born to Raise Hell together with Dee Snider ( Twisted Sister ) as a tribute to Lemmy Kilmister. After that, the band recorded their debut EP . The EP was produced by Todd Campbell and mixed by Cameron Webb . The self-titled EP was released on November 18, 2016 on the Motörhead Music label. In the summer of 2017 the band played numerous concerts in Europe as a support act for Guns n 'Roses as well as at the Download Festival , the Sweden Rock Festival and Hellfest . At the end of June 2017, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons were signed by the German record label Nuclear Blast . At the same time, the exclusive live EP Live in Solothurn was released.

The Age of Absurdity

In August the band recorded their debut album together with producer Romesh Dodangoda . Parts of the recordings took place in Rockfield Studios, where Queen recorded the song Bohemian Rhapsody , among others . A tour of the United Kingdom with Airbourne followed in November . The debut album The Age of Absurdity was released on January 26, 2018 and contains Silver Machine, the cover version of a song by the band Hawkwind . Its singer Dave Brock contributed background vocals. The album debuted at number 53 in the British, number 36 in Germany, number 60 in the Austrian and number 29 in the Swiss album charts.

On April 21, 2018, the band released the song Silver Machine as a 7 ″ single as part of Record Store Day . The band used the unreleased song Shit Happens as the B-side . In spring 2018 the band played a European tour and performed at festivals such as Summer Breeze , the Alcatraz Hard Rock & Metal Festival and the Matapaloz -Festival der Böhsen Onkelz . The Age of Absurdity won the Best Debut Album category at the 2018 Metal Hammer Awards . Another European tour followed in autumn 2018. In the UK the band was supported by the group Leader of Down , while in Germany Tim McMillan & Rachel Snow played as opening act.

In February 2019 the band played a European tour supporting Slash feat. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. On October 25, 2019, Phil Campbell released his solo album Old Lions Still Roar , on which his sons can be heard in part. During an interview with the German magazine Metal Hammer , Campbell revealed that the band had already started work on a new album. Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons were nominated in the category best British band at The Rocks 2020 music award, presented by the radio station Planet Rock . However, the award went to Def Leppard .

style

Even though some of the songs by Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons resemble Motörhead's music, the band also uses newer stylistic influences, mostly coming from his sons. For Phil Campbell it was "a completely new experience to be able to work without limits", since the listeners have very precise ideas about what they want to hear in relation to Motörhead. Holger Stratmann from the German magazine Rock Hard located the music of Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons "somewhere in the intersection of creaky rock 'n' roll and dark hard rock". His colleague Jan Jaedike described the music from the instrumental side as a “slightly more noble version of Motörhead”. Frank Thiessies from the German magazine Metal Hammer described the music as "varied, hearty heavy rock with a tonally modern touch". Singer Neil Starr's lyrics are about the things that happen around him and occupy him.
