Old Lions Still Roar ( Engl. : Old lion roar yet ) is the first solo album by Welsh guitarist Phil Campbell . It was released on October 25, 2019 via Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

Long-time Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell had the idea for his solo album since 1999 . However, due to the tight schedule of his band at the time, he was never able to realize this. Only when Motörhead broke up with the death of the singer Lemmy Kilmister did Campbell find the time to implement his idea. At the beginning of the 2010s he set up a recording studio in his house and collected riffs and licks over the years . Around 2016, the recordings began, which took place without any time pressure. Phil Campbell made it a point to write ten different sounding songs that had nothing to do with his old band Motörhead.

Campbell then sent the finished song ideas to various musicians whom he would like to have as guests on his album. He only received commitments. In addition to his three sons, with whom he runs the band Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons , greats of the metal and hard rock scene like Rob Halford ( Judas Priest ), Alice Cooper or Dee Snider ( Twisted Sister ), but also musicians from the pop area like Mark King ( Level 42 ). Phil Campbell left the lyrics to the respective singer. Leon Stanford interviewed Campbell and wrote a text about his early days in the music business. Dee Snider, on the other hand, wrote on These Old Boots about all the old musicians involved in the project who are still in business after a long time.

Phil Campbell did not want his former Motörhead colleague Mikkey Dee with him to break away from his past with his solo album. Also, Campbell previously assumed that Dee would be too busy with his new band Scorpions and would not have time for him. Phil Campbell would not have wanted his other former Motörhead colleague Lemmy Kilmister on his solo album if he had still been alive. They've both done so many songs together in the past, but Campbell wanted to do something different.

The album was produced by Todd Campbell, while Soren Anderson mixed the album . The album title goes back to one of Phil Campbell's sons, who suggested Old Lions Still Roar as the song title. According to Phil Campbell, the title would fit the solo album perfectly, as there would be "a lot of old sacks". An animated music video has been released for the song These Old Boots . A lyric video was released for the song Swing It .

Reviews

According to Holger Stratmann from the German magazine Rock Hard , Phil Campbell's solo album differs "only in nuances from his Bastard Sons family clan". Songs like Swing It or These Old Boots would have "cut a good figure on a Motörhead album", while the song Rocking Chair would have "what it takes to be a radio hit". However, the two ballads would be more "yawning". Stratmann awarded 7.5 out of ten points. Frank Thiessies of the German magazine Metal Hammer wrote that "ironically, it is not the songs with the really big names that move the most", with These Old Boots with Dee Snider being an exception. In addition to Leon Stanford, Nev MacDonald, Whitfield Crane and Benji Webbe would convince. Thiessies awarded 4.5 out of seven points.
