On the Border is the third studio album by the American rock band Eagles , released in 1974 . The album, which has sold more than two million times in the United States, marks the stylistic development from country rock to mainstream rock and is the first album with guitarist and singer Don Felder , who expanded the band into a quintet.

History of origin

The band tried harder sounds during the recording sessions at Olympic Studios in London . The music producer Glyn Johns was replaced by Bill Szymczyk after the recordings for the two tracks You Never Cry Like a Lover and Best of My Love and the sessions were moved to the Record Plant music studios in Los Angeles . The reason for the change was that Johns emphasized the country elements and harmonies in the production, while Frey and Henley intended a harder sound. Szymczyk had worked with blues guitarist BB King and slide guitarist Joe Walsh .

Glenn Frey asked Don Felder to play the slide guitar for the recording of Good Day in Hell . The other members liked Felder's guitar playing so much that they accepted him into the band as the fifth Eagle. Felder can also be heard on Already Gone with the double guitar solo. It was later included in the album credits.

Publication and chart success

Asylum Records released the album on March 22, 1974. The album peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200 . The album was not placed in the German-language charts. The Eagles achieved their breakthrough in the German-language charts with the album Hotel California from 1976. In the Dutch Top 40, the album reached number 3 in May 1974 and lasted 8 weeks.

The first single, Already Gone , entered the US charts on June 29, 1974, reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and lasted 15 weeks.

Named after the American actor of the same name , James Dean was released as the second single. The title reached the US hit parade on October 12, 1974, reached number 77 and lasted five weeks.

With the third single, The Best of My Love , which entered the American charts on March 1, 1975, the band's first number 1 was listed on the Billboard Hot 100. The title lasted 19 weeks.

The album was awarded the second platinum record in March 2001 by the Recording Industry Association of America for more than two million records sold .

reception

In his review for the music database Allmusic , William Ruhlmann said that the album was a transitional work which, more than usual for the Eagles, combined different styles and elements. It is both a review of the band's earlier work and at the same time anticipating what will come later.
