JD Souther
John David "JD" Souther (born November 2, 1945 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American singer-songwriter , country rock singer and actor.
biography
JD Souther grew up in Amarillo , Texas . In his youth he was heavily influenced by the music of Roy Orbison and tried to imitate his style. In the late 1960s, Souther moved to Los Angeles , where he met Glenn Frey , a guitarist who, like himself, was from Detroit. They started writing and playing music together. One of their LA neighbors was Jackson Browne , with whom they both worked often later.
Souther and Frey founded the folk duo Longbranch Pennywhistle . Her only long-playing record was released in 1970 on Jimmy Bowen ’s Amos Records ; guitarists James Burton and Ry Cooder , violinist Doug Kershaw , drummer Jim Gordon , pianist Larry Knechtel and bassist Joe Osborn were involved .
After he recorded his first solo album at the urging of David Geffen in 1972, he founded the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band with Chris Hillman and Richie Furay . The group released two albums and then broke up.
Souther's greatest hits as a songwriter include Best of My Love , Victim of Love , Heartache Tonight and New Kid in Town , all interpreted by the Eagles . He also wrote songs for his former girlfriend Linda Ronstadt and recorded several pieces with her. With Bonnie Raitt he sang the title Home on her album Sweet Forgiveness .
Souther's biggest hit as a solo artist was You're Only Lonely (in the style of Roy Orbison) from the LP of the same name in 1979 , a top ten hit on the Billboard charts . Her Town Too from Taylor's album Dad Loves His Work , released with James Taylor , came in at number eleven .
He played in the concert Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night (1987). In 1989 he sang the song Smoke Gets In Your Eyes in the film Always - Der Feuerengel von Montana .
As an actor, he was in the role of John Dunaway in the third season of the US television series thirtysomething and Ted in the movie Greetings from Hollywood (1990). In 2012, he had a recurring guest role on the Nashville country series .
In December 2004, Souther moved from Los Angeles to Nashville , where he lives with his family.
Souther is a Democrat and appeared in late 2006 with Jackson Browne and Michael Stanley as a fundraiser for Democratic candidates in Ohio .
His title How Long , which he wrote back in 1972, and which appeared on the Eagles' album The Long Road Out of Eden in 2007 , won a Grammy in the same year .
