Gimme Back My Bullets is the fourth studio album by the rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd and was released by MCA in February 1976 .

background

After Ed King left the group on a tour in 1975, Gimme Back My Bullets became the group's only album to include only two guitarists. According to their new producer Tom Dowd , the band had reached a weak point in their career. Even Gary Rossington complained later that the shots came at a wrong time. The first songs were recorded at the Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles in late September to October 1975 . The group then toured Europe for three weeks and then returned to Capricorn Studios in Macon , Georgia in November 1975 to complete the album. The group's collaboration with Dowd was very positive. In addition to his production achievements with Cream , Allman Brothers Band and Derek and the Dominos , personal sympathy came, so that he was called Father Dowd by the band . The group therefore had ideas to name the album Ain't No Dowd About It . According to Rossington, Gimme Back My Bullets should n't be a reference to cartridge bullets , instead it refers to hits in the charts. The title was created during a conversation with singer Ronnie Van Zant about the Billboard charts. After Call Me The Breeze on Second Helping, the album contains another cover piece by JJ Cale with I Got The Same Old Blues .

occupation

Chart successes

Gimme Back My Bullets reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 and the single Double Trouble reached number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 . In January 1981 it was awarded gold by the RIAA .

reception

  • Thomas Erlewine wrote on Allmusic that Gimme Back My Bullets would be a disappointment, especially after the three outstanding predecessors. Even if the group was in good shape, the producer wouldn't have put enough energy into the band's performance either. Three out of five stars were awarded in the evaluation.
  • The music journalist Robert Christgau suspects that unfortunately the previous producer Al Kooper and the former guitarist Ed King gave the album more whistle than adding the three background singers. Gimme Back My Bullets received a B +.
  • In Rolling Stone David McGee wrote that the title track of the album is powerful and Double Trouble and Searching would be good rock songs. However, the quality would continue to decline and a feeling of indolence would arise. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a good band in limbo.
