Thomas Delmer "Artimus" Pyle (born July 15, 1948 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is a former American drummer , who gained fame primarily with the rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd .

Life

After high school, Pyle joined the Marine Corps for a few years in the late 1960s . He then attended the Tennessee Technical College . In the early 1970s he managed to get some gigs with the Charlie Daniels Band and the Marshall Tucker Band , so that he soon became known as a session musician. Both groups had toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd and in October 1974 the band played their first live with Pyle, after a song with Saturday Night Special had already been recorded in the studio. When Bob Burns left Lynyrd Skynyrd after the European tour in December 1974, Pyle joined her as the new drummer. He stayed with the group until their plane crash in October 1977 that broke his sternum. When the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrds continued as the Rossington-Collins Band, Pyle was originally supposed to be part of the group, but was unable to attend due to a motorcycle accident. He founded the Artimus Pyle Band in the early 80s, with which it came to various publications. In 1987 he took part in the Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour and was also represented in the group's 1991 Reformation with a subsequent studio album. However, Pyle left Lynyrd Skynyrd again because there would have been too much drug and alcohol use within the band. He then continued to be active in various formations. In 2007 a studio album Artimus Venomus was released under his own name.
