Pop Evil is an American rock band from Grand Rapids , Michigan . The band is under contract with Universal Records and Eleven Seven Music .
history
Beginning: 2001–2009
Lead singer Leigh Kakaty and drummer Dylan Allison played in a band called TenFive . With this they released the album Severn in 1999 and the EP Dam Electro EP in 2001 . The music mixed indie pop and post grunge with electronic influences. After the band split up, Kakaty and Allison formed Pop Evil. Without a contract with a label, they released the album War of the Roses in 2004 and the EP Ready or Not in 2006 .
On August 12, 2008, the debut studio album Lipstick on the Mirror was released on the independent label "Pazzo Music", whose owner "Fontana Distribution" belongs to the Universal Music Group . For the album, the band worked with Al Sutton, who also produced Kid Rock , among others .
During a concert in March 2009, the band announced that they had signed a contract with Universal Records . The album Lipstick on the Mirror was then re-released. The single 100 in a 55 stayed in the USA for 30 weeks in the Active Rock Charts and was number 28 in the annual charts. For the first time, 100 in a 55 also reached the top ten of the mainstream rock charts (8th place). In July and August 2009, Pop Evil toured North America with Whitesnake on Judas Priest's anniversary tour .
National breakthrough: since 2010
In June 2010 the band announced that producer Johnny K ( 3 Doors Down , Staind , Disturbed ) could be engaged for the second studio album War of Angels . Although the album was originally supposed to be released in February 2011, Pop Evil signed a new contract with eOne Music . The album didn't hit stores until May 2011. The first two singles were called Last Man Standing and Monster You Made . During this time, drummer Dylan Allison had to be replaced by Chachi Riot due to a broken vertebra. In addition to a few tours as support for Papa Roach , Finger Eleven , Theory of a Deadman and Puddle of Mudd , the bands also played headlining shows in North America for the first time. The third single, Boss's Daughter , was released in January 2012. Mick Mars from Mötley Crüe took over the guitar parts as a guest musician . While the album made it to number 43 in the official album charts for the first time, the first three singles all reached the top ten of the mainstream rock charts. In the Hard Rock charts, War of Angels immediately reached the top position. As a result, the band toured outside the United States for the first time: in Canada as support for Black Label Society and in Sweden with Seether .
On February 28, 2013, the band released the single Trenches . She was the harbinger of the third studio album Onyx . The single reached number 1 on the mainstream rock charts in June, stayed there for a month and became the most successful rock single of the year. The second single Deal with the Devil was also able to reach the top position in December 2013 / January 2014. The album Onyx was released on May 14, 2013 and reached number 39 in the charts.
In February 2014 the band signed a contract with Eleven Seven Music, which regulated the distribution of the albums and singles to Europe. This contract also provided for the first European tour: as support for Five Finger Death Punch they played shows in Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands, among others. On May 20th, the band announced on their own Facebook page that the current album Onyx would be available worldwide from now on.
style
The band belongs to the genre of rock music. Post-grunge and hard rock should be mentioned in particular as sub-forms . The harder singles also go to the fringes of alternative metal . Pop Evil is based on other modern rock bands, for example Crossfade , Shinedown and Puddle of Mudd , but also on Soundgarden and Pearl Jam . Critics also see influences from Staind , 3 Doors Down or Nickelback in the quiet ballads . There is also a certain proximity to Volbeat , Papa Roach and Linkin Park . The single Colors Bleed , released in 2018, has clear influences from Rage Against the Machine .
