Away from the Sun (Engl. For " Away from the Sun ") is the second studio album by American rock band 3 Doors Down . It was released on November 11, 2002. The album is best known in Germany for the song Here Without You , the group's most successful single in this country.

background

After the group completed the tour of their successful debut album, the band members recovered for four months before "getting hungry to make music" again. In a rented house, the band worked four hours a day on new songs. According to singer Brad Arnold, many of the lyrics on Away from the Sun are about loneliness, a feeling that inspired him during the tour. Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson produced the song Dangerous Game for the group on the album .

More singles

In the USA, after When I'm Gone, another single was released: The song The Road I'm On reached number eight on the mainstream rock charts.

reception

The album sold over four million times worldwide. It reached number eight in the USA and number 49 in Switzerland. In Germany it reached number 28, in Austria even number 27. In Canada it received a platinum award, in the USA the album was certified four times platinum status.

Michael Edele from laut.de certified that “every song exudes its own charm” on the album, “even without having to rely on sizzling guitars”. Matthias Eisen from cdstarts.de sees the album as a “perfect repetition of the concept of the predecessor”, which he also sees as the greatest weakness, since “the often very clichéd rock of the four Americans is too predictable, too smooth, without a real profile ”. Marcus Schleutermann was impressed by the album in Rock Hard magazine and judged: “The debut The Better Life sold over five million copies worldwide, received various awards and was nominated for a Grammy. In view of this furious start, 3 Doors Down had a heavy burden to bear with their successor. It remains to be seen whether they repeat or even surpass commercial success. In any case, the alternative rockers from Mississippi have withstood the pressure creatively and with Away from the Sun delivered an album that even surpasses the level of the debut. The new single When I'm Gone is in no way inferior to the old hit Kryptonite and provides the perfect introduction to an album without failures. The remaining eleven songs are also all good to outstanding, although I particularly like the amazingly heavy riffing Sarah Yellin ' , the dramatic changes and the two melancholy Ticket and I Feel You . Also worth mentioning are the string ballad Here Without You and the Dangerous Game spiced with percussion elements , with which the band around Brad Arnold, who once again inspires with his charismatic voice, provides variety. Producer Rick Parashar (including Temple Of The Dog, Nickelback) did a first-class job as usual and gave Away from the Sun a powerful and transparent sound. Strong! ”He gave nine out of ten points.
