Peter von Hagen

Peter Hagen, (also: Peter Hagen, Peter Hagius * 1569 in Henneberg at Heiligenbeil (East Prussia) ; † 31 August 1620 in Kneiphof ) was a German church songwriter , educator and poet .

Life

Hagen was born on his parents' estate, he studied at the University of Königsberg , the University of Helmstedt and on January 4, 1594 at the University of Wittenberg . Following his studies, he became the rector of the school in Lyck in 1594 and the rector of the Kneiphof in Königsberg (Prussia) in 1602. On March 3, 1607, he received a master's degree in philosophy and remained in Königsberg until the end of his life.

In Konigsberg he became close friends with Johann Eccard . One of his students was Simon Dach . In the book “Prussian Festlieder” (Königsberg 1598) there are some of his songs, which were set to music by Eccard. Other song texts were provided with melodies by his student Johann Stobäus in 1604. Some of his song texts also found their way into the community hymn books and this several times up into the 18th century . His popular songs include: “Rejoice, you worthy Christianity, this is the day of the Lord”, “I know that my Redeemer lives, although many enemies plague us”, “Rejoice, all of you Christians, the Prince of Triumph Jesus Christ Heaven goes ".

Hagen is also known as the author of edification writings in verse.
