Believe is the second studio album of American Metal - band Disturbed . It was released on September 17, 2002 via Reprise Records and reached number one on the US album charts . The album was in the United States with double platinum award. It was the last Disturbed album with Steve "Fuzz" Kmak.

Emergence

The album Believe was recorded in March and April 2002 at Groovemaster Studios in Chicago . Video recordings of the studio work were published on the DVD M.OL (stands for Meaning of Life ), released in June 2002 . When writing the new songs, the band set themselves the goal of making their connection to classic metal and bands like Metallica , Pantera and Rush clearer than with their predecessor The Sickness . All twelve songs were written and composed by the band. The guitarist Dan Donegan played all the keyboards on the album . Cellist Alison Chesley appears as a guest musician on the song "Darkness".

Produced was Believe by Johnny K (born John Karkazis ) and the band. Mixed was Believe by Andy Wallace in the Soundtrack Studios in New York City . The mastering was done by Howie Weinberg in the recording studio Masterdisk. Music videos were recorded for the songs "Prayer", "Remember", "Liberate" and "Bound" , with the video for the song "Prayer" causing controversy . The cover artwork shows the symbols of various religions . Next to the cross of Christianity are the Star of David of Judaism , the crescent moon for Islam and the pentagram for Satanism .

In an interview with the German magazine Rock Hard , singer David Draiman sketched the album as a person's adolescence . In comparison, he described the debut album The Sickness as a newborn baby screaming with rage, while the sequel Ten Thousand Fists describes a grown man who has found his place.

The prayer video

The song "Prayer" is about a conversation between singer David Draiman and God . The accompanying music video is based on the book of Job from the Hebrew Bible . Draiman got the inspiration for the song from two events: the death of his grandfather and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .

In the video shot by the Strause brothers, singer David Draiman can be seen walking down a street. He encounters desperate people in various ways, such as B. a prostitute , a homeless person or a preacher who talks about the end of the world . The other band members get involved in a car accident, an explosion on a construction site and the collapse of a scaffold as the video progresses. At the end of the video, Draiman survived an earthquake .

Various TV stations and video platforms refused to broadcast the video because the scenes shown could remind viewers of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The band then considered re-cutting the video or replacing scenes with concert recordings. Eventually the band refused to edit the video. David Draiman commented on the matter to MTV :

“The video actually speaks a message. It's about getting through life's obstacles and all the tests that fate may throw at you in the process. It's trying to convince you that you have the strength to get through whatever trials and tribulations may come your way. It's supposed to inspire hope. "

“The video contains a message. It's about overcoming the obstacles in life and all the tests that fate throws at your feet. It should try to convince you that you have the strength to overcome all tests and worries. It should spread hope. "

- David Draiman

Musical style

The sound of Disturbed has changed a lot compared to the debut album The Sickness . While rap vocals and electronic elements such as synthesizers were used on the first album , these have almost completely disappeared on this album. Draiman has reduced his rap performances significantly and now mainly sings. This makes the album seem very melodic and catchy, but it still remains a "heavy" album. The band Disturbed doesn’t play Nu-Metal anymore, but more and more elements of classical metal are used. With the song Darkness there is also a quiet song on the album for the first time.

reception

The album received good reviews from the trade press. Henning Richter from the German magazine Metal Hammer wrote in his review that the band “were able to further develop their strengths” and that the songs were “even more melodic, even more compact and even angrier”. The fact that the album " offers more variety than The Sickness " made Disturbed a "big hit". Richter gave the album six out of seven points. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from the German magazine Rock Hard praised the “unmistakable singing” of David Draiman in his review and stated that Believe , unlike its predecessor, “works like a unit”. Mühlmann awarded eight out of ten points. Spin magazine made negative comments , where the reviewer was of the opinion that the album sounds as dry and brittle as if it had been recorded on a Dell computer.

Believe went to number one on the US album charts. In the first week, 284,000 copies of the album were sold in the US alone. It was also ranked number one in New Zealand, while Believe was number two in Canada. The album was ranked 68 in Germany, 42nd in Austria and 91st in Switzerland.

To date, Believe has sold over two million copies in the US alone , for which the album was awarded double platinum. In Canada, the album went platinum for over 100,000 units sold. The album also went platinum in Australia for 35,000 albums sold.
