Emergence

As in the run-up to the previous album Indestructible , singer David Draiman was hit by personal and business blows of fate. After he came home from the last tour his fiancée left him, his dog had died in the meantime and business partners had betrayed Draiman. In an interview, the singer described 2009 as a "really shitty year".

“My band is already making fun of me, according to the motto:“ Don't hold it against us, but we hope that this won't change anytime soon. Otherwise you would have nothing to write about. "I'm afraid you are right."

- David Draiman

In September 2009, Disturbed began working on the new album, before recording began in February 2010. According to guitarist Dan Donegan, the band had written 15 to 18 songs. As with the previous albums, recordings took place in the Groovemaster Studios in Chicago . The band produced Asylum themselves. In addition to the songs for the new album, the band recorded a cover version of the Judas Priest song "Living After Midnight". The song appears on a tribute sampler published by the British magazine Metal Hammer to mark the 30th anniversary of the Judas Priest album British Steel . The band stayed in the studio for a total of seven weeks.

The mixing was in a studio in Los Angeles conducted by Neal Avron. The album cover was designed by Raymond Swanland. A music video was shot for the theme song, directed by Robert Schober .

In an interview, Draiman admitted that he himself occasionally suffered from depression without needing treatment. Music helps him overcome despondency. The first single "Another Way to Die" deals with the topic of global warming . The text is about the options for action that people need to be aware of. According to guitarist Dan Donegan , however, the band does not want to act as environmentalists. In "The Animal" is about the werewolf - myth . It's about a man who turns into a werewolf in the moonlight and enjoys becoming a beast, having more strength and spreading fear. For the intro of the song, Draiman worked with various effects devices.

The song "Never Again" is directed against Holocaust denial . The Jewish singer David Draiman stated in an interview that he feels obliged to cover this topic for personal reasons.

“The President of Iran , Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , denies the Holocaust every day. He carts anti-Semitic professors from all over the world to confirm his statements. Unfortunately for God, he is only one of many who think the Holocaust is a myth and is in fact based on a film that was edited by the Jewish elite. "

- David Draiman

Draiman stated in an interview that his maternal grandparents survived internment in concentration camps . His grandfather was in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and had to bring corpses to the crematorium . His grandmother was in Auschwitz concentration camp and stood three times in the lines that led to the gas chamber .

The song "Serpentine" is a swipe at a former friend of Draiman's. In an interview he stated that while she was a lousy slut , he couldn't resist her body. “My Child” describes an event in Draiman's life. His girlfriend at the time was pregnant . While Draiman was preparing for his future role as a father, his girlfriend lost the baby. The song "Innocence" deals with the judiciary in the USA. Draiman got his inspiration from watching a television report about corruption among lawyers .
