The Sickness ( . English for the disease ) is the debut album of American Metal - band Disturbed . It was released on March 7, 2000 via Giant Records and is the band's best-selling album with over four million units sold in the US alone . The album went five times platinum in the US and the single " Down with the Sickness " went platinum.

Emergence

For the album, the band used songs that were written in 1998 and 1999 and released on various demos . The recordings of The Sickness found in November and December 1999 in Groove Masters studio in Chicago instead. The album was produced by Johnny K (real name John Karkazis) and the band. Mixed was The Sickness by Andy Wallace, while Howie Weinberg, the mastering took over. Music videos were shot for the songs “Stupify”, “Down With the Sickness” and “Voices” . The song "Shout 2000" is a cover version of the song " Shout " by the British band Tears for Fears .

The text of the song "Stupify" contains three words in Hebrew with "ta fa ched" . The German translation is something like “I am afraid”. The album cover depicts a monster that was formed by society and is just being born. The album title represents the philosophy of individuality .

reception

The Sickness has received various reviews. Bastian Greb from the online magazine Bloodchamber.de praised the “distinctive singing” by David Draiman and the “varied songwriting”. Greb awarded 9.5 out of ten points for the album. Steve Huey from Allmusic was also positive . In his opinion "the band doesn't have to go far to get total control of their sound" and spoke of an "excellent debut album".

Marcus Schleutermann from the German magazine Rock Hard expressed himself more critically, who criticized the uniformity of the songs and said that singer David Draiman “does too little with his charismatic voice”. Schleutermann gave The Sickness 6.5 out of ten points.

The album reached number 29 on the US album charts and was five times platinum for more than four million units sold in the US. The single "Down with the Sickness" went platinum in the USA. "Down with the Sickness" is also the seventh most downloaded song in the US in the 2000s .

Re-releases

The Sickness has been re-released twice so far. The first re-release came on September 16, 2002 on the occasion of the release of the second studio album Believe and contains the song "God of the Mind" as a bonus, as well as live versions of the songs "Stupify", "The Game", "Voices" and "Down with the Sickness" ". The live recordings were made at a concert on March 10, 2000 at Chicago club The Metro .

On March 23, 2010 Reprise Records released the so-called 10th Anniversary Edition on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the release. This version contains the songs "God of the Mind" and "A Welcome Burden" as a bonus and contains a slightly changed cover. The album is also available for the first time as a record .
