Ten Thousand Fists ( English for "Ten Thousand Fists") is the third studio album of American Metal - band Disturbed . It was released on September 19, 2005 via Reprise Records and reached number one on the US album charts . In the USA , the album was awarded double platinum .
Emergence
After completing the “Music as a Weapon II” tour, bassist Steve “Fuzz” Kmak had to leave the band due to personal differences. He was replaced by John Moyer , who previously played in the Texas- based hard rock band The Union Underground . Disturbed rented a former warehouse as a rehearsal room in which the new songs were written and rehearsed. As there are a few restaurants near the hall , the band received frequent visits from the police as the restaurant owners complained about the band's noise.
The recordings took place from January to April 2005 in the "Groovemaster Studios" in Chicago . In total, the band recorded 19 songs, 14 of which were released on the album. Among these 14 songs is “ Land of Confusion ”, a cover version of a song by the band Genesis from their album Invisible Touch . After “Shout 2000”, a cover version of the Tears for Fears song “Shout”, it is only the second cover version that Disturbed has released. Originally, after “Shout 2000”, which appeared on the debut album The Sickness , Disturbed didn't want to record another cover version. At the suggestion of Dan Donegan , “Land of Confusion” was recorded because, according to singer David Draiman , the “biting and apt lyrics” would go well with the album concept.
The album was produced by Johnny K and the band. The album cover was designed by Todd McFarlane , best known for the Spawn comic series . The band mascot "The Guy" appears here for the first time . At the end of June 2005 the song "Guarded" was played on various radio stations for the first time . As singles the songs "Stricken", "Just Stop" and "Land of Confusion" were released.
In an interview with the German magazine Rock Hard , Draiman sketched the album as a grown man who has found his place. In comparison, he described the debut album The Sickness as a newly born baby crying with rage, while the predecessor Believe the adolescence phase describes a person.
Lyric background
Singer David Draiman describes Ten Thousand Fists as the band's most political record. More than half of the 14 songs deal with the topic of war . "Deify" is about people who become a deity through their office . As examples of this, Draiman named US President George W. Bush , the Pope and media mogul Ted Turner in an interview . At the beginning of the song you can hear excerpts from a televised address by President Bush immediately after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 . "Overburdened" revolves around a soldier who on his death waits. He wonders why he finds himself in this predicament and realizes that he has only followed orders from people he trusted. "Forgiven" is about the victims of a soldier. As soon as the victim is killed, the victim forgives the soldier for his act, since the soldier will be the next to die. "Avarice" is about the endless greed of the most powerful politicians in the world. Wars are instigated to satisfy greed. Another topic deals with "Sons of Plunder". Draiman criticizes the music industry, which "always manages to kill a trend by signing 100 bands that all sound the same".

reception
Ten Thousand Fists received various reviews from the trade press. The German rock-hard magazine named the album "Album of the Month". In his review, Uwe “Buffo” Schnädelbach acknowledges that “the 14 hymns are addicting after the first take” and that “the often used phrase no fillers, just killers applies to this record”. Schnädelbach awarded nine out of ten points, the average grade was 8.5 points. Metal hammer editor Matthias Weckmann was less enthusiastic and accused the band of “musically stepping on the spot”. Weckmann gave the album four out of seven points.
Of Ten Thousand Fists 239,000 units were sold in the first week of sales in the US and managed as its predecessor Believe the leap to number one on the US album charts.
