Indestructible ( engl. " Unbreakable ") is the fourth studio album of American Metal - band Disturbed . It was released on May 31, 2008 via Reprise Records and reached number one on the US album charts. The song Inside the Fire was nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance .

Emergence

The songs for the album were written in the summer of 2007. At the end of October 2007 the band began recording at the Groovemaster Studios in Chicago . For the first time the band produced the album themselves. Singer David Draiman described the music on the new album as darker and more complex than on the previous albums. The band tried to "bring in the vibes from their debut album 'The Sickness'". The band recorded a cover version of the Faith No More song Midlife Crisis . However, the song is only used as a B-side . A total of 15 songs were recorded, of which twelve made it onto the album. On December 7, 2007, the band finished recording.

Draiman drew inspiration for his lyrics from a chain of unfortunate events. In the years since its predecessor Ten Thousand Fists was released , Draiman had a motorcycle accident, his home garage burned down, and various relationships failed. In addition, one of his friends committed suicide . As a result, negative feelings built up in him, which is why he wanted his bandmates to have the most vicious and brutal sound.

A music video was recorded for the song Inside the Fire , directed by Nathan Cox. At the beginning of the video, singer David Draiman reads a warning that the video is about suicide. Anyone who is suicidal should call telephone counseling . As a precaution, the band released a second version of the video in which only the band can be seen. The music video was first shown on May 2, 2008 on the band's homepage .

In early March 2008 Disturbed played a concert for US soldiers stationed in Kuwait . With Perfect Insanity , a song from the new album was played live for the first time. By the end of the month, the single Inside the Fire was being played by more than 60 radio stations in the United States. On April 17, 2008, the album cover and track list was announced.

In an interview with German rock hard singer David Draiman commented on the album's lyrics.

Draiman wrote the theme song primarily for the US soldiers. The song is intended to encourage people and help them overcome fears. Inside the Fire is based on a true story from Draiman's life. An ex-girlfriend committed suicide. The music video shows the devil whispering in Draiman's ear that he should also take his own life in order to follow her. Deceiver also covers an experience from Draiman's life. It's about a person who betrayed and deceived him, but was seen through by him. In The Night , the night is depicted as a being that protects a person from the lies of the world and acts as a liberating force.

Perfect Insanity describes human madness as portrayed in films such as The Silence of the Lambs . In Haunted , Draiman reflects on the experiences he gained during the time he lived in Los Angeles . Draiman phrased the text as if he were explaining to a local why he does not feel he belongs to the city. Enough describes how people perpetuate conflict instead of realizing when it's enough. The Curse is about using inner strength to weather a curse . It's about never giving up.

With Torn it comes to that in a relationship, the feelings can be so strong for each other, that they cover the problems and conflicts. Criminal describes painful feelings within a relationship. The suffering that one partner inflicts on the other is shown here as criminal. Divide criticizes the efforts of many people to unite everything and to suppress individuality and personal views. Façade describes a woman who is beaten and abused within a relationship. Nonetheless, it pretends to be an ideal world for the outside world.

reception

Indestructible received good reviews from the trade press. According to Matthias Weckman from Metal Hammer , the album shows "all the virtues that make the band stand out from the crowd" and awarded six out of seven points. Uwe “Buffo” Schnädelbach from Rock Hard praised the fact that the band “breaks new ground without shaking the foundations of their unique sound” and named “every goddamn single note” as a tip. He awarded nine out of ten points.

Like its predecessors Believe and Ten Thousand Fists, Indestructible entered the US album charts at number one. In the first week of sales, 253,000 units were sold in the US. According to Billboard , Disturbed are only the sixth rock band to have entered the album charts with three albums in a row. Previously only Van Halen , U2 , Metallica , the Dave Matthews Band , Staind and System of a Down have done this . In mid-July 2008, 532,000 units were sold, which corresponds to a gold record .

It reached number two in the album charts in Finland . In Germany, the album debuted at number eleven.
