Origin and company history
Early modern times: pre-forms of death benefit insurance
The company's roots go back to the Dutch craft guilds of the 17th and 18th centuries, which were already familiar with an early form of death benefit insurance . The guild rules stipulated that members in need were granted economic aid. If a guild member died, a proper funeral was organized and the bereaved were financially supported. Special funeral coffers were set up to finance funerals . When the guilds disappeared, the money was put in special funeral funds .
20th century
In the course of the worldwide labor movement , the Dutch workers' association Patrimonium took up the solidarity-based ideas of the guilds again in 1923 . The association founded the Apeldoornsche Begrafenisvereeniging (i.e. Apeldoornsche Funeral Association) to enable citizens to have a dignified burial regardless of their social position. In 1955 the association was transferred to the non-profit Monuta Stichting (i.e. Monuta Foundation). At that time the name of the company was created, which is derived from the Latin saying "Mors (est) ianua vitae" ("Death is the gateway to life"). Monuta was later transformed into today's stock corporation Monuta Verzekeringen NV , whose shares are fully held by Monuta Stichting .
21st century
Monuta has had a branch in Düsseldorf since 2007 . In 2018, Monuta's death benefit insurance was recognized by Focus Money . In the Netherlands, the funeral home now operates around 100 branches, each of which has a funeral home. The company also has seven of its own crematoria and three of its own cemeteries . In 2017 Monuta carried out over 20,000 burials.
