Wednesday Morning, 3 AM is the debut album by the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel . The cover and label are subtitled “exciting new sounds in the folk tradition”.

history

The folk duo Tom and Jerry had already renamed themselves to Simon and Garfunkel in 1964 . At first it was planned to go into the studio for A&R Records and record an album. At Columbia Records now worked the producer Tom Wilson , and he just had his first successes with Bob Dylan . He liked the songs of Paul Simon and so he decided to sign the young duo. The album was recorded in March 1964 and, in addition to songs by Paul Simon, also contained songs by other authors. At the center of the album is the song Paul Simons The Sounds of Silence , published here for the first time , which was to become a hymn of the generation of the 1960s and the title song of the second , far more successful album by Simon and Garfunkel. The song ensured the breakthrough of the folk duo and became a central song in the film The Graduation from 1967, which would advance to a cult film as well as the breakthrough of the actor Dustin Hoffman .

The first release of the album in 1964 was initially a failure. In 1966 Columbia Records decided after the success of the next album by Simon and Garfunkel to release the LP again. This time the album reached 30th place on the Billboard album charts as the highest ranking.
