Ed McCurdy (born January 11, 1919 in Willow Hill , Pennsylvania , † March 23, 2000 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) was a Canadian folk singer , songwriter and television entertainer.

life and career

In 1937 McCurdy moved to Oklahoma where, within a few years, he became known locally as a radio host and disc jockey . In 1948 he took up a position as a presenter at CBC in Vancouver , which was later broadcast from Toronto . Folk performers such as Pete Seeger , Lena Horne and Josh White appeared on his show, and McCurdy published his first own record of folk songs in 1949. From 1950 he worked as a folk musician and TV entertainer in New York. Shortly before this time, his most famous song, Last night I had the strangest dream , was written, which later became a hymn of pacifism and established a tradition of new anti-war songs of the counterculture in the USA that differed from the more traditional protest songs .
